Smith Hosts Spring EMBA Networking Event
The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business welcomed
MBA (EMBA) alumni, current students, faculty, and administrators to a special networking
event on April 17, 2012, at The Mayflower in Washington, D.C.
Professor Joyce E. A. Russell – Distinguished Tyser Teaching Fellow and Senior
Executive Education Fellow and newly appointed vice dean of the Smith School – led
a discussion on the changing nature of the workforce, along with the following alumni
On January 1, 2011, the oldest members of the 78 million member Baby Boomer generation
celebrated their 65th birthday. Starting on January 1, approximately 10,000 Baby
Boomers a day turn 65. The birth of this generation launched new directions in society
so too will the retirement of these same individuals impact the workforce and cultures
of companies across industry and geography.
Organizations will have to understand both the opportunities and challenges presented
by a workforce that is drastically changing. The Millennial generation will have
more opportunities than previous generations as employers redefine what makes an
applicant competitive for a position. They will impact the culture of a company
with their technical savvy and vastly different attitudes towards work/life balance
and motivation in the workplace.
The panel discussed how various stakeholders are responding to these challenges
and the implications for the government, the military, the medical profession, and
different types of business organizations.
