Allan Edelson, ’81
Director, Deutsche Bank Berkshire Mortgage, Inc.

During his outstanding career, Allan Edelson, ’81, has risen to become one of the top volume loan originators in the country, and now, as a Senior Originator, runs the Chicago office for Deutsche Bank Berkshire Mortgage (DBBM). Today the Smith School welcomes a man whose accomplishments embody his distinguished firms motto: A Passion to Perform.

For the past 13 consecutive years, Edelson has shone as DBBMs top originator. Since joining DBBM in 1995, he has originated in excess of 435 multifamily loans, resulting in approximately $6.3 billion dollars in loan value in a staggering 34 states.

As one of the few top volume originators in the country for both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, Edelson has directly originated in excess of $1 billion for each of these investors. His expertise ranges from large negotiated transactions, facilities, senior housing, tax-exempt structures and one-off flow transactions.

Edelson began his career in Dallas as a mortgage broker for Grubb & Ellis. Prior to joining Deutsche Bank Berkshire Mortgage, he served in a variety of real estate positions. He was a vice president in the New York office of Bear Stearns Real Estate Group and chief financial officer of First National Development in Chicago.

Edelsons most recent accomplishment reflects his special relationship with the Smith School and with his late father, Charles B. Edelson, former professor of accounting. Edelson has endowed the Charles B. Edelson Undergraduate Scholarship with the hope that it will help encourage students to pursue a career in business. He expressed his dedication to the endowment, saying, Universities are among the most important institutions we go through in our lives, so supporting and strengthening them is important for our children and our society. Allan is continuing in his fathers tradition of commitment to Smith by becoming a member of the Board of Visitors. In this role, he will help in providing guidance and feedback on how to encourage alumni engagement for future development of the school.

Edelson holds a B.S. from the University of Maryland, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in 1981, and a Masters of Business Administration from Harvard University where he graduated in 1985. He received his CPA certification in 1983. Allan Edelson currently lives in Illinois with his wife Denise, ’81, and their two children.
