SMITH COMMUNITY
On Friday, September 8, Freshman Convocation will kicked off Business Week - an annual event for undergrads at Smith - with greetings from student leaders and recent grads, followed by a reception with a deliciously popular chocolate fountain.

On Saturday Terps' fans they enjoyed a football tailgate party, sponsored by ClearChannel, and on Monday the annual SUSA First Look Fair got students acquainted with the clubs and organizations for business students. Tuesday, September 12, was movie night at the Campus Recreation Center's pool with a showing of Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

GE SIGNATURE EVENT
General Electric (GE) is more than just a light bulb company. That's the message John Loomis, vice president of human resources at GE Industrial, shared with Smith students on September 13 at the GE Signature Event. A Maryland alumnus (class of 1974), Loomis began his GE career in the human resources management program and later held several management positions, including senior human resources manager for GE Transportation Facilities, vice president of human resources for GE Energy, and his current position. Loomis used his extensive experience within GE to give Smith students a comprehensive summary of GEs businesses, long-term plans, and employee development programs.

Loomis emphasized that GE cares deeply about employee professional development and spends about one billion dollars annually on employee training and development initiatives. That is only one reason this company has been ranked Most Admired by industry executives six times.

After Loomis's speech, current GE employees described their experiences in the leadership programs. One employee said that the four six month rotations that she completed during her leadership program helped her to decide which GE business she preferred and to find a good fit within the company.

CAREER FOCUS
On Thursday, September 14, the Second Annual Career Premiere was held in Thomas G. Pownall Atrium, VMH. This is an informal networking event designed to allow freshmen and sophomore students to develop networking skills, interact with professionals in the business world, and find out more about careers at companies that frequently hire Smith graduates.

This year, the Office of Career Management was pleased to present an Undergraduate Career Fair on Friday, September 15 in Cole Field House. "After months of planning we were proud to bring to fruition what employers and students have been clamoring for: an event designed exclusively for business students to connect with the top organizations that recruit at Smith," said Monica Shutte, director of undergraduate student programming.

Maryland Public Television taped interviews during the Career Fair with Smith staff, students and recruiters for three Smith Business Close-Up segments that will be airing soon on your local MPT stations.
