Business Week 2005
Kicks Off Another Great Year at Smith
On
September 9, Business Week 2005 kicked
off with freshman convocation in Van
Munching Halls Frank Auditorium. During
the weeklong event, incoming students
were welcomed and given the opportunity
to meet the deans and professors,
network with JPMorganChase
representatives, as well as get to know
their classmates. On Saturday, students
were invited to attend the Alumni
Tailgate before the Terps Clemson game
where they were able to network with
current students and alumni.
Monday
brought everyone to the Van Munching
Hall courtyard for the SUSA BBQ and
First Look Fair where students had the
opportunity to explore the 20 student
clubs and organizations. In addition,
the Office of Career Management, as well
as other Smith School offices, was
present to assist incoming freshmen to
all the resources available to them.
Students also had the opportunity to
meet with deans, program directors, and
faculty during a luncheon on Tuesday in
the third floor atrium. Students learned
about the schools strategic goals,
research fellowships, and special
programs such as
QUEST and
Hinman CEOs. On Tuesday night, the
Office of Career Management held a
resume workshop for students. About 25
students from all four classes attended
and took advantage of the opportunity to
have their current resume critiqued or
to learn how to create one from scratch.
On
Wednesday night,
SUSA hosted the first of its kind
JPMorganChase Signature Event. With
recruiters on hand, students were
invited to dress their best, bring their
resumes, and network with
representatives from the company. The
two-hour event commenced with a
presentation in Frank Auditorium where
Smith alumni from the bank presented
opportunities. Smaller, more intimate
breakout sessions followed allowing
students to ask questions and hear about
the experiences of alumni currently
working for one of the more prestigious
bulge-bracket banks. The event ended
with refreshments and an opportunity for
students to network one-on-one with
recruiters and alumni.
Career Premier closed out the weeks
events where representatives from 32
companies were invited to meet with
students. Many of the largest Fortune
500 companies were in attendance
including Exxon Mobil, KPMG and Verizon.
Smith juniors and seniors took advantage
of the opportunity to find jobs and
internships, while freshmen and
sophomores took the chance to learn
about the different companies and
industries.
