Smith Welcomes New MS Students

In a week filled with activities, MS students at the Robert H. Smith School of Business were introduced to both life at Smith and in the United States. From Wednesday, Aug. 15, to Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2012, students came from all over to attend the new MS student orientation before starting their school year in College Park.

Some students came from Maryland; some came from other states around the U.S.; and many hailed from China. Excited at the prospect of studying in America and in a location so close to Washington, D.C., the students exuded enthusiasm as they walked through the welcoming halls of Van Munching.

For many of them, those hallways they walked through on their first day of orientation will be the same that become a home away from home as they begin their journey in one of Smith’s four MS programs: Accounting, Finance, Information Systems and Supply Chain Management.

New students received a warm welcome from Dean G. “Anand” Anandalingam and other members of the Smith School’s faculty and staff. On Thursday, the international students attended informational sessions from the Office of International Services to learn about adjusting to life in the United States. This was followed by presentations on Friday by the Office of Career Services (OCS) about making the most of OCS and the services it offers. Students also learned about resume reviews, scheduling coaching appointments and upcoming career fairs.

After a weekend to explore their new home, the students reconvened on Tuesday to meet with faculty and staff from the Masters Programs Office (MPO). The staff at MPO talked about the university’s honor pledge and code of academic integrity before introducing students to university librarians.

They then had a day of bonding and teamwork as they headed over to the University of Maryland’s ropes course, where they participated in teambuilding and ice breaker activities. Wednesday ended with an English Provision Exam for the international students.

At the end of orientation, students walked away with a solid foundation of what to expect as the newest MS students at the Robert H. Smith School of Business.
