Smith School Welcomes 300 MS Students

The University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business welcomed 300 new MS students from around the world on Friday, Aug. 19, 2011. The school currently has four MS programs: accounting, finance, supply chain management (SCM), and information systems (IS) – SCM and IS just launched this year. These new students will join about 180 existing MS students already studying finance and accounting.

The orientation program kicked off with a welcome from Smith School Dean G. “Anand” Anandalingam, who gave an overview of the Smith School’s vision. “We are a very large business school with about 5,000 students and 200 faculty members,” said Dean Anand. “The school is consistently ranked as one of the top business schools in the nation, for all degree levels.”

Dean Anand encouraged students to be entrepreneurial and engage with faculty and classmates engage to their fullest extent during their MS experience. “We believe you can make a difference in the world with this degree,” he said.

The academic program directors for each discipline also welcomed students during the day-long orientation:

  • Stephen Loeb, Accounting
  • Mark Taranto, Finance
  • Gary Cohen, Supply Chain Management
  • Peter Weiss, Information Systems

Smith MS programs are designed to accommodate both full-time students and working professionals who enroll on a part-time basis. Classes are held at the school’s College Park, D.C. and Shady Grove campuses.
