Smith School Joins NSF and Pew Charitable Trusts to Sponsor Finance Information Workshop

Sixty experts including computer scientists, finance professors and financial regulators will be meeting at a two-day Workshop on Knowledge Representation and Information Management for Financial Risk Management, July 21-22, 2010.

Sponsored by the National Science Foundation, Pew Charitable Trusts and the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business, the purpose of this workshop is to help develop the underlying theory and framework that might unify the disparate ongoing and planned efforts at understanding and managing the enormous data and information flows in the financial services industry, and to develop a comprehensive list of the challenges in this domain with respect to robust risk assessment and management. The goal is to produce a white paper with clear recommendations for financial regulators.

Principal Investigators include Louiqa Raschid and A. "Pete" Kyle from the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, and Mark D. Flood from the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

"Knowledge representation and data management research have many tools that can be applied to provide better data integration and data sharing capabilities whilst preserving privacy, integrity and trust in the framework," says Raschid, professor of information systems at Smith. "I am excited to see the recommendations of this multi-disciplinary group of researchers and regulators."
