Smith Community Celebrates 10th Annual Monte Carlo Night

MonteCarloNightDecked out in their finest, 700 MBA students, faculty, staff, and alumni of the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business gathered for the 10th Annual Monte Carlo Night at the Omni Shoreham in D.C. on Feb. 19, 2011 for the school’s largest event, outside of commencement. Prior to Monte Carlo Night, nearly 200 alumni gathered at a special networking reception before heading into the main event.

Monte Carlo Night was established in 2002 by MBA students to raise money for a memorial fund in honor of two part-time MBA students, M. Scott Lamana and Eric Cranford, who were killed in the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Every year, a portion of each ticket sold is donated to benefit a local charity. Since its inception, Monte Carlo night has grown every year and has become a keystone event of the MBA student calendar.

The black-tie optional event gives the community the opportunity to come together in an entertaining atmosphere, hit the casino tables for some risk-free gambling, meet old friends, network with new people, dance, have a lot of fun… and even win some prizes. At the end of the night, the big winners can exchange their chips for raffle tickets. Five Amazon.com gift cards worth $1500 were given away.

"Monte Carlo Night has become such a great tradition for the MBAA and the entire Smith community,” said Michael Lukich, president of the MBA Association (MBAA). “My board and I were truly honored to be able to organize and plan this year's installment. I'm proud to say that this year's event was the largest one in history, with more than 700 attendees. It was a fantastic evening for all of the students, faculty, staff, and alumni who attended."

“Once again Monte Carlo Night surpassed my expectations,” said Mike Marcellino, assistant dean for masters programs. “Every year I mark this down as a must attend and it's remarkable how this event has grown over the years into such a great tradition.” Marcellino also attended the alumni reception beforehand and said, “It was great to see the alums and hear about their personal and professional accomplishments.”
