Smith Business Close-Up: Disruptive Technologies in the Year Ahead

Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, 7:30 p.m. | Sunday, March 2, 2014, 7:30 a.m.

As technology constantly evolves, so do many industries – often because they are forced to. Businesses that fail to adapt to disruptive technologies often don’t survive. One industry that is seeing the impact of technology in the digital age is education.

In this edition of Smith Business Close-Up with the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business, Henry Lucas talks about disruptive technologies and his recent experiences teaching Massive Online Open Courses – free online courses that often have more than 10,000 students participating.

Lucas is the Smith Chair Professor of Information Systems. His recent book, “The Search for Survival: Lessons from Disruptive Technologies,” presents a model of survival to guide managers in responding to potentially disruptive
technologies.  His research interests include information technology-enabled transformations of organizations, markets, industries and our daily lives. He has conducted research on the impact of information technology on organizations, IT in organization design, electronic commerce, and the value of information technology. Lucas co-produced and co-wrote “The Transformation Age: Surviving a Technology Revolution with Robert X. Cringely,” a documentary co-developed by Maryland Public Television and the Smith School shown on public television stations around the U.S. He has authored a dozen books as well as monographs and more than 70 articles in professional journals.
