“My project required me to look for atypical solutions outside of the traditional finance sphere. I ended up using quite a bit of theory imparted from the operational finance class, which ended up playing an integral role in my solution. In addition, I think that my earlier participation in social venture consulting and case competitions really afforded practical and applicable project management and strategic frameworks," said Lauren DeStefano who completed her summer internship at Intel Corporation.

On Smith Business Close-Up: Setting CEO Pay – Executive Compensation

Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, 7:30 p.m.
Sunday, Oct. 4, 2009, 7:30 a.m.
Monday, Oct. 5, 2009, 4:30 a.m.

In 1980, the average CEO’s compensation was about 42 times what the average worker was paid, and by 2007, CEOs received about 344 times the average worker salary. There’s a debate over whether this ballooning of executive compensation is a failure of corporate governance, evidence of abuse of power, or just a reflection of market forces -- that top CEOs must be paid top dollar, or they’ll take their (presumably irreplaceable) talents to other organizations. But how do companies arrive at these astronomical sums?

Entrepreneurs begin their ventures lacking a lot of things—employees, funding, customers, technology. A large part of their success relies on their ability to get these things, and that depends in large part on the entrepreneur’s ability to network with people and organizations that can provide them with everything from further connections to equipment to good advice.
NEWS RELEASE (03/18/09): New Research Finds Carrying Big Bills Curbs Spending; U-Md. Business School Finds Large Denominations Help Shoppers Keep a Closed Wallet

College Park, Md. – March 18, 2009 – Keep large bills in your wallet if you want to spend less cash, according to new research from the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. Researchers find people are more likely to think twice about making a purchase when they carry one large denomination of cash rather than many smaller denominations equal to the same amount of money — for example, you’re more likely to hang onto a $20 bill than 20 one-dollar bills. This is because there is a greater “pain of paying” associated with breaking a large bill and there is a good chance you will lose track of spending when you break a large bill. When those studied knew they had to save $100 or exercise self-control in spending, they were more likely to choose a single $100 bill than five $20 bills.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Transportation were poised to auction landing and take-off time slots at New York’s major airports on January 12 before a last-minute court-ordered stay halted the action. Airport slots have never been auctioned, anywhere in the world, and a group of professors from the University of Maryland was instrumental in designing the process. The auction plan will now become a proposal under the Obama administration, where it may die.

Online peer-to-peer (P2P) lending, where individual investors provide unsecured micro-loans directly to individual borrowers without the intermediation of financial institutions, has experienced rapid growth in recent months, with new loan expected to reach a billion dollars by 2010. Unlike traditional lending which is coordinated by a centralized institution (e.g. banks), online P2P lending is largely decentralized with individual lenders making lending decisions independently, or as part of a network of lenders.

A Dozen Student Entrepreneurs Travel to China with Dingman Center

“This has totally changed my life,” exclaimed one student winner of the Young Entrepreneurs Award in the Robert H. Smith School of Business’ China Business Plan Competition in Beijing this past October. He was beaming with emotion as he received his Olympic-esque medal and $1,000 cash award — one of 10 such awards — for his five-minute business pitch in the competition, hosted by Smith’s Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship. His sentiment was echoed by the 12 Smith students who traveled to China to learn about business, entrepreneurship and culture through the competition and a week of networking, meetings, business visits and other activities.
