University of Maryland Business School Launches M.S. in Business: Finance
Smith School Focuses on Preparing Leaders for New Financial Landscape
College Park, Md. – February 9, 2009 — The University of Maryland’s Robert H.
Smith School of Business today announced the launch of the Master of Science in
Business: Finance, a new program to prepare students to lead in a financial
industry that is being reshaped by greater government regulation and
intervention. Students will be immersed in the center of the action —
Washington, D.C., the hub of financial regulatory activity.
“The global financial crisis has changed the way we think about finance,”
said G. “Anand” Anandalingam, dean of the Robert H. Smith School of Business.
“Now more than ever there is a need for industry professionals with a solid
understanding of evolving financial models for banking and debt management,
corporate governance and management.”
Students will have the advantage of taking classes in Washington from Smith’s
world-leading faculty, who have been working to dissect and correct what went
wrong in banking and finance that led to the economic turmoil. Smith faculty
have been working closely with the Securities and Exchange Commission and the
FDIC, among other agencies, and have also been active advisors to large
financial institutions and multinational corporations.
The M.S. program will prepare students to analyze and direct the financial
decisions of an organization in the global economy. Emphasizing quantitative
methods, students gain a deep understanding of and appreciation for the
theoretical foundations of finance today.
The Smith School is now accepting applications for classes that begin this
fall at the school’s Washington, D.C. campus in the Ronald Reagan Building and
International Trade Center. The part-time program meets twice weekly and takes
15 months, but can be accelerated to be completed in a year.
