The NIAC was established by executive
order to provide President Bush with
advice on the security of information
systems for critical infrastructure
supporting banking and finance,
transportation, energy, manufacturing,
and emergency government services. NIAC

Gordons appointment follows wide,
national recognition for leading

economic aspects of information and
cyber security. Gordon, a pioneer in
developing the field of cyber security
economics, has been an active
participant in numerous information
security research studies and is one of
the authors of the Annual CSI/FBI
Computer Crime and Security Survey. The
Computer Crime and Security Survey is

Investigations (FBI) Computer Intrusion
Squad. This survey indicates how often
crime occurs on computer networks as
well as the costs.
Cyber security has become a key
issue for private and public
organizations in the digital economy and
Larrys appointment reflects his active
and influential role as one of a handful
of preeminent researchers worldwide who
are applying economic concepts to cyber
security problems, said Howard Frank,
dean of the Robert H. Smith School of
Business.
Gordon and Martin Loeb, Smith School

book Managing Cyber Security Resources:
A Cost-Benefit Analysis, forthcoming
publication in October 2005 from
McGraw-Hill. Gordon is also an
internationally-known scholar in the
area of managerial accounting. His work
focuses on such issues as performance
measures, economic aspects of
information security, cost management
systems, the interface between
managerial accounting and information
technology, and capital investments. In
two recent comprehensive studies, Gordon
was cited as one of the world's most
influential/productive accounting
researchers. He is editor-in-chief of
the Journal of Accounting and Public
Policy and serves on the editorial
