Landstar Chair Jeffrey Crowe Named Person of the Year
by University of Maryland Logistics Groups

College Park, Md. October 27, 2004 The Logistics, Transportation and Supply Chain Management Society (LTSCM Society) and the Supply Chain Club (SCC) of the University of Marylands Robert H. Smith School of Business have named Jeffrey Crowe, chairman of Landstar System Inc., as their 2004 Person of the Year. The LTSCM Society and SCC will present the annual award to Crowe in a ceremony at the university on October 29, 2004.

Crowe served as chairman of the United States Chamber of Commerce from June 2003 through May 2004. He has served on the U.S. Chambers board since 1998, working on the Transportation Committee and the Education, Employment and Training Committee. Crowe was also recently chairman of the National Defense Transportation Association, which has supported Smith School of Business students with substantial scholarship funds over the past few years.

Jeff Crowe is a leader and a champion for innovation, qualities which are especially important as e-commerce and the increasingly global marketplace require a growing focus on logistics, transportation and supply chain management, said William DeWitt, teaching professor of logistics, business and public policy at the Robert H. Smith School of Business. He has shown thoughtfulness and creativity in his leadership positions at Landstar, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other national organizations, and we are very pleased to honor Jeff Crowe with this years Person of the Year Award.

Landstar, headquartered in Jacksonville, Fla., is one of the largest non-asset-based transportation capacity providers in the United States, with a network of more than 7,700 business capacity owners (small business contractors who supply the company with the equipment used to haul freight), 17,000 third party truck capacity providers and 1,000 independent agent locations. The company has been named one of Americas Best Big Companies by Forbes magazine for four consecutive years.

The LTSCM Society provides networking and career development opportunities for Smith School undergraduate students, while the SCC provides networking and placement opportunities for the schools graduate students. Each year, the groups present the Person of the Year Award to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the logistics, transportation and supply chain management industry. The award is presented as part of LTSCM Industry Day, which also includes a career fair. As many as 80 recruiters from more than 30 companies are expected to participate in this years event.

Previous Person of the Year honorees include Linda Morgan, former chair of the Surface Transportation Board and the Interstate Commerce Commission; Michael J. Ward, chairman, president, and CEO of CSX Corp.; Don Schneider, president of Schneider National Inc.; Herb Johnson, past president of the Council of Logistics Management; and Edward Emmett, president of the National Industrial Transportation League.
