Smith School of Business Names Michael Agnew Assistant Dean for Career Management

College Park, Md. - December 17, 2002 - The Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, has appointed Michael Agnew as assistant dean for career management. Agnew has more than 18 years administrative, research, and teaching experience in higher education, including five years at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, where he designed and taught career management coursework to MBA students. Most recently, Agnew was assistant dean at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, where he was credited with revitalizing career services, significantly improving student and recruiter services, and helping the school improve in several national rankings.

"We were impressed by Mike's proven ability to increase the number of student interviews and improve recruiter satisfaction, as well as by his national network of professional relationships," said Howard Frank, dean of the Robert H. Smith School of Business. "With Mike on board, we have taken another important step in our aggressive effort to boost our career placement measures to a level that truly reflects the caliber of our students."

In addition to holding key career services positions at Wharton and Minnesota, Agnew was director of the career center at Michigan State University's Eli Broad School of Management, where he built the MBA Business Career Services Office and re-structured career services.

At the Smith School, Agnew oversees the Office of Career Management (OCM), which provides career management, placement, and counseling to graduate and undergraduate business students.

The OCM also provides professional services to the business community seeking to connect with Smith students, by developing recruiting strategies that help companies source and recruit master's-level and undergraduate talent.

"I am very excited to be working with such talented and motivated students, as well as with a career services team dedicated to helping these students find the rewarding opportunities they seek," said Agnew. "I look forward to building upon the strengths of this office and pursuing new initiatives that will enhance career opportunities for Smith School students."

At the University of Minnesota, Agnew also managed and reorganized managerial communications and served as faculty director for the university's "Strategic Advantage" program. Agnew earned his doctorate degree in the area of career management.
