Top-10 Rankings for
Smith School of Business Undergraduate
Program
College Park, Md. - September 7,
2000 -Three specializations of the
Robert H. Smith School of Business
undergraduate program are ranked among
the top 10 nationwide, according to
U.S. News & World Report's 2001
survey of the nation's best
undergraduate business programs. In the
survey results published in the
September 11 issue of the news magazine,
the Smith School's undergraduate
specialization in management information
systems is ranked 7th; in e-commerce,
8th; and in human resources, 10th.
Two other areas, entrepreneurship and
general management, are ranked 12th and
21st respectively. Overall, the Smith
School's undergraduate program is ranked
21st nationwide. The survey results are
based on responses from deans and senior
faculty members of business schools.
"These rankings reflect the strength
of our exceptional faculty, our
challenging and innovative programs for
the new economy, and our academically
talented students," said Patricia
Cleveland, assistant dean for
undergraduate studies at the Smith
School.
"They also reflect the depth we've
achieved across all departments. I
expect our rankings to rise as our
student admissions continue to become
increasingly competitive."
In addition to study within the Smith
School's academic departments, Smith
undergraduates have opportunities to
participate in several special
cross-disciplinary programs. For
example, the Smith School offers an
undergraduate citation program in
entrepreneurship. And the school's
Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship and
the University of Maryland's A. James
Clark School of Engineering have
established the Hinman Campus
Entrepreneurship Opportunities (CEOs)
Program, a living-and-learning setting
for a select group of undergraduates who
plan to start their own businesses.
University of Maryland's QUEST
(Quality Enhancement Systems and Teams)
Program joins Smith School
undergraduates with those from the Clark
School of Engineering in team-based
courses. Through Business, Society & the
Economy, part of the College Park
Scholars Program, undergraduates from
the Smith School and the university's
other colleges and schools focus on
business strategies, cross-cultural
behavior, business ethics, and other
topics.
