New PhDs Join Smith for Fall 2013

Jared Watson was pumping gas at a Costco near Seattle when he read the email that he gotten into the PhD program at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business. “I almost fainted,” he recalls. Watson’s dream of becoming a marketing professor was about to begin. He moved to the East Coast to begin the fall 2013 semester with Smith’s new cohort of 18 PhD students.

Watson’s classmates hail from throughout the U.S., India, China, South Korea, Taiwan, the United Kingdom and Italy. They come from top research institutions and will be exploring such topics as corporate governance, financial markets, consumer behavior and social networks. After an orientation program the week of August 19, the PhD students dove right into their first classes.

Watson has had his sights set on Smith for a few years now. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in business with a concentration in marketing from the University of Washington, he went to work for Pepsico’s Frito Lay division. He oversaw supermarket marketing for specific segments, but was always perplexed by the “why” behind corporate marketing decisions. A chance meeting with a former professor helped him realize he wanted to become an academic. He applied to Smith two years ago, but wasn’t accepted. His former University of Washington professors helped him beef up with research resume and let him volunteer in the business school’s behavioral research lab. When it came time to apply again, the Smith School topped his list. And this time, his hard work paid off.

The Smith School was also No. 1 on Kate Bryan Sedano’s short list of PhD programs. Sedano, a self-described “nerd” who loves the research process, was attracted to Smith School because of its top faculty. She’s ready to hit the ground running in the organizational behavior program in the Management and Organization department. Sedano’s past research has explored how stress affects people and she’s interested in applying that to employee engagement and performance.

Sedano was also attracted to Smith’s community. She felt the “fit” was right when she first came to visit Smith, and now that she has officially started the program, she is sure of it. The new group of PhDs will only add to Smith’s already strong collegial atmosphere and sense of pride among students, faculty and staff.
