Jacob Veitch '18 Commands His Career

Jacob Veitch '18 Commands His Career

Victor Mullins, associate dean of the undergraduate program at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business, recently interviewed Smith junior Jacob Vietch ’18 to discuss how he is “commanding his career” during his Smith Journey. So what does the Smith journey entail? During their freshman year, Smith students begin to build their personal brand through the SmithStart program. Sophomores dedicate their second year to pioneering their path to success by focusing on an overall academic and career strategy. Junior year focuses on students taking command of their careers during to ensure that they are well positioned for their professional journey. Finally, as a senior with an arsenal of tools, knowledge and networks, Smith students are able to embrace their experience and celebrate their success.

Dean Mullins: Reflect on how you “built your brand” during your freshmen year.

Jacob: From day one, the most important thing I have done is to “be present” while getting involved in various student organizations and academic programs. You must always be prepared, passionate and persistent and “be present.” Brand building is person-to-person, and it is crucial to remember that every interaction – and each person you interact with - matters. Put people first, and your brand will flourish! With each experience, I have strengthened my professional network, something that has paid great dividends ever since.

Dean Mullins: How are you going to “command your career” during your junior year?

Jacob: This fall, I am a teaching assistant for the Global Fellows program in Washington, D.C., an intern at the U.S. Department of State and a co-chair for the Smith’s Business Honors program. I have been blessed with the opportunity to serve peers, the community and our nation. Service is at the core of my brand, and experiences like these have allowed me to bolster my resume and strengthen my network. My focus has shifted from building my brand to commanding my career, but these two actions remain quite similar. I continue to push myself, remaining hungry for success, while being in service to others.

Dean Mullins: What advice would you give to your fellow Smith peers and community?

Jacob: A few thoughts:1) Be Aspirational. The future calls for bold leadership, so reject cynicism and welcome zeal. Always aspire to be a part of the solution. 2) Be service-oriented. We don't always deserve our good fortune, so share your talents and gifts with others. Live with purpose. 3) Be Yourself. The best version of yourself is you, so define your own path. Have passion in all you do and be proud of who you are!

Dean Mullins: How are you making your mark on campus?

Jacob: I have been involved with many great things on campus. What I have always loved the most however, is the opportunity to meet so many different people and build so many long-lasting friendships. It is my hope that, as a leader, I have assured others of my dedication to their lives, whether that be by attending one of their acapella group's concerts, seeing them play in a field hockey match, or simply remembering our conversation from the last club meeting. It is certainly those interpersonal marks and memories that mean the most to me.

Dean Mullins: What is your dream?

Jacob: I want to be a change-maker. My true passion is government because I believe that our government is the greatest platform for enriching the lives of others. As we look around today however, there are many that doubt this - and rightfully so. Perhaps government is the platform in which I can be a change-maker. It is certainly not the only one. Ultimately, my dream is to simply help others, something I pray I never lose sight of in the name of any specific platform or office.

Dean Mullins: Why are you passionate about the Smith School?

Jacob: The Smith School has always afforded me incredible opportunities to get involved and forge my own path. As students, we are blessed with an administration that actively invests in our success. It is thanks to the generosity and support of the Smith School, our wonderful administration, and our fantastic alumni network, that I have grown substantially as a young professional during my time at the University of Maryland. One day soon, I hope that I can be of similar help to future Smith School students!
