Andrew Murosko '17 Embraces His Experience

Victor Mullins, associate dean of the undergraduate program at the University of Maryland's Robert H. Smith School of Business, recently interviewed Smith Senior Andrew Murosko’17 to discuss how he is “embracing his experience” during his Smith journey. So what does the Smith journey entail? During their freshman year, Smith students begin to build their personal brand through the SmithStart program. Sophomores dedicate their second year to pioneering their path to success by focusing on an overall academic and career strategy. Junior year focuses on students taking command of their careers during to ensure that they are well positioned for their professional journey. Finally, as a senior with an arsenal of tools, knowledge, and networks, Smith students are able to embrace their experience and celebrate their success.

Andrew MuroskoDean Mullins: Reflect on how you “built your brand” during your freshmen year.

Andrew: I remember hitting the ground running with the SmithStart program. Within my first few weeks on campus, I developed a professional resume with the help of the Office of Career Services, attended a mock-networking night and the Fall Career Fair. Throughout my freshman year, I also “built my brand” by getting involved with finance clubs, traveling with my fellow Smith freshmen to London, and working at the Office of Undergraduate Program.

Dean Mullins: How about your sophomore year? How did you “pioneer your path?”

Andrew: I refined my academic interests within the Smith School by participating in the Sophomore Wall Street Fellows Program. This was a great introduction to my niche within my finance major. I was able to participate in a Finance Fellows Networking Night, learn from several industry guest speakers, and get a better idea of my career interests.

Dean Mullins: And how did you “command your career” during your junior year?

Andrew: During my junior year, I focused on networking and obtaining an internship. I attended many campus recruiting events offered by the Smith School, interviewed with numerous banks on-campus, and took multiple trips to visit alumni in New York, Baltimore and Washington, D.C. I am thankful for the strong Smith Alumni community for assisting me throughout this process. I ultimately interned at an investment bank in Washington, D.C., during the summer.

Dean Mullins: As you approach graduation from the Robert H. School of Business, how are you “embracing your experience?”

Andrew: I am on the Lemma Senbet Fund as an Energy & Utilities analyst. I feel like this amazing opportunity is a capstone culmination of everything that I’ve learned over the past four years. And has brought my Smith experience full-circle. It’s been great to learn from many beyond-talented classmates, travel to New York City to visit Smith Alumni, and be a leader within the Finance major.

Dean Mullins: What advice would you give to your fellow Smith peers and community?

Andrew: Use the resources that the Smith School has to offer. From the many clubs, to the Office of Career Services, to the Dingman Center, to the Bloomberg Labs, to Rudy’s Café, understand that the faculty and staff of the Smith School want you to succeed. We are very privileged to have the resources that we do and they will help you with classes, with your career search, and with becoming active in the Smith Community.

Dean Mullins: How have you/are you making your mark on campus?

Andrew: I love introducing prospective students to the University of Maryland and the Robert H. Smith School of Business as a front-desk worker in the Undergraduate Program Office.

Dean Mullins: What is your dream?

Andrew: Owning my own business. I am very attracted to the idea of being responsible for my own successes and failures through managing my own operation. Starting a small business is both risky and challenging which is something that I don’t shy away from.

Dean Mullins: Why are you passionate about the Smith School?

Andrew: The Smith School has offered the resources, support and programs to help me succeed in business. It’s hard to not be passionate about a school that has helped me to develop both academically and professionally. What I’ve gotten from Smith will help me to make an impact on my post-grad endeavors.
