Student housing at the University of Maryland, on- and off-campus, has significantly increased in the past decade. The construction of seven apartment buildings, dubbed South Campus Commons, has given students the option of on-campus apartment living, while several privately owned off-campus complexes aimed at students have opened in recent years.

Smith School of Business is ranked No. 13 in the United States and No. 51 in the world, according to the 2012 Financial Times executive education rankings published October 15, 2012. The influential EMBA rankings place the Smith School No. 6 globally for faculty research, an area of strength for which the school is consistently recognized as a leader.

Smith School of Business today named Michael Roth, vice president of North American Operations at Amazon.com, as the 2012 “Person of the Year.” Roth was recognized by students and faculty at Smith’s 20th annual Industry Day career and networking event.
On October 1, 2012 - China's National Day - the Robert H. Smith School of Business hosted executive MBA students from Peking University HSBC School of Business (PHBS). The 31 executives were travelling across the U.S. on a study trip, visiting several U.S. cities and universities to learn more about the global economy from a U.S. perspective.
