Curriculum: Program Format
The Smith MS in Business: Finance was developed for full-time students and
working professionals and can be completed in as few as nine months (full-time
option) or up to 12 to 15 months (part-time). Classes are held at the Smith School's Washington, D.C. campus in the Ronald Reagan
Building & International Trade Center and in College Park, MD.
Core Courses (14 credits)
The full-time curriculum consists of seven core courses providing a solid
finance foundation:
- Financial Management
- Capital Markets
- Introduction to Financial Accounting
- Valuation in Corporate Finance
- Derivative Securities
- Financial Econometrics I
- Financial Econometrics II
The part-time curriculum consists of the same core courses. However, part-time
students who are unable to take the Financial Econometrics classes may substitute
for this requirement by taking at least four credits in the more quantitative finance
electives upon approval of the Academic Director. Possible options include:
- Fixed Income Derivatives
- Financial Engineering
- Quantitative Investment Strategy
Elective Courses (16 credits)
Electives allow students the flexibility to specialize in a particular area of
finance or to become highly qualified generalists.
