Zachary Arens

2011 Candidate:  Zac is a first year Ph.D. student. He holds an undergraduate degree in marketing information systems from James Madison University and a masters degree in survey methodology from the University of Maryland. Prior to joining the Ph.D. program Zac worked as a statistical analyst and methodologist at the Gallup Organization in Washington D.C. and San Francisco. His research interests include survey research methodology, consumer attitudes measurement and modeling.

Yu-Jen Chen

2011 Candidate:  Yu-Jen is a first-year student in the Ph.D. program at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland. Prior to joining the Ph.D. program, he obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in Management Science (June 2002) from National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan and his MBA degree (June 2004) with concentration in finance from National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan. While working on his master’s thesis, Yu-Jen developed interests in behavioral finance and decided to study consumer behavior as his future research.

At Maryland, he was awarded a full graduate assistantship and a Dean’s Summer Research Fellowship for his Ph.D. studies. His research interests include consumer decision-making, judgment, and pricing.

Kevin D. Dayaratna


2009 Candidate:  Kevin D. Dayaratna graduated from the University of California at Berkeley (2005), having majored in Applied Mathematics, with a specialty in mathematical physics. In addition to mathematics, he also took a significant amount of coursework in political science, primarily comparative politics, human rights issues, and international law. Kevin also published nineteen political articles and opinion columns for California newspapers and magazines.

At Maryland, Kevin was awarded a full graduate assistantship and Dean's Summer Fellowship for his studies. In his first year, he co-authored a publication proposing an alternative estimation technique for the Logit Model, using series expansions. His current research interests are now in the arena of entertainment marketing, particularly the movie industry and sports marketing. He currently uses Bayesian Statistics and optimization theory heavily in his research. He is also interested in introducing mathematical techniques to the field of marketing that may be useful in modeling real world phenomena.

Olga Dorokhina

2009 Candidate:  Olga is a first-year Ph.D. student. She received her MBA from the University of Saskatchewan in Canada with concentration in Marketing. She also earned a M.Sc. in Psychology from Samara State University in Russia where she was the recipient of the Scholarship for Academic Excellence. Olga was awarded a full graduate assistantship and a Dean's Summer Research Fellowship for her Ph.D. studies at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland.

Olga has experience doing strategic marketing research projects for PricewaterhouseCoopers Canada, Canadian provincial and local governments.

Her research interests include behavioral decision making and cross-cultural marketing.

Francine Espinoza

2008 Candidate:  Francine received a MSc. degree in marketing with great distinction (2004) and an undergraduate degree also in marketing (2002) from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Francine held a research assistantship while undergraduate student and has been awarded a fellowship while a masters’ student. She presented papers in conferences such as AMA and EMAC and have papers published in leading journals in Brazil. Before joining the PhD program at UMD, Francine was a partner in a consulting firm on marketing research and strategy. Her research interests include consumers’ heuristics and biases (e.g. emotions, intuitive thought) and information processing (e.g. attitude formation and change, memory).

Jing Gao

2009 Candidate:  Jing is a first-year student in the Ph.D. program. She received her Master of Applied Statistics from Ohio State University and her B.S. in Finance with Outstanding Student Scholarship from Sichuan University in China. Before coming to US, she worked as a financial analyst in Shenzhen, China.
Jing was awarded a full graduate assistantship, along with a Dean's Summer Research Fellowship, for her Ph.D. studies. Her primary research interest is marketing modeling and customer relationship management (CRM).

Gauri Kulkarni

2008 Candidate: Gauri is a fourth-year student in the Ph.D. program. She has Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics and Economics from the Pennsylvania State University (May 2002, GPA 3.8). She was awarded a full graduate assistantship, along with a Dean's Summer Research Fellowship, for her Ph.D. studies. Gauri attended the INFORMS SMS Doctoral Consortium in 2005, 2006, and 2007. She also presented a paper at the Marketing Science Conference in 2006. Her research interests include consumer online search, marketing strategy, quantitative (empirical) modeling, consumer economics, and customization. Prior to joining the program, Gauri held a Mathematical Statistician position with the federal government.

James "Ted" Matherly

2010 Candidate:  Ted has a Bachelor's degree in Communications (April 2006) from the University of Michigan.  Ted also worked at an advertising agency in Ann Arbor in media planning.  He was awarded a full graduate assistantship, along with a Dean's Summer Research Fellowship, for his Ph.D. studies. 

Ted is focused on behavioral marketing, and his research interests include Consumer Behavior and Word-of-Mouth.

Ke Na

2011 Candidate:  Ke is a first-year Ph.D student. He holds a Bachelor degree in Statistics from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics in China and a dual Master degree in Statistics and Economics from University of Missouri-Columbia.

Hyoryung Nam


2010 Candidate: Hyoryung is a first-year Ph.D. student. She received her M.S. degree in Management Engineering from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) Graduate School of Management and her B.S. degree in Political Science and International Relations from the Korea University. Before joining the PhD program, she worked as a brand manager in consumer goods industry in Korea.

At Maryland, Hyoryung was awarded a full graduate assistantship and Dean's Summer Fellowship for her studies. Her current research interests include empirical models of consumer choice and CRM (Customer Relationship Marketing).

Anupama Kothari

2007 Candidate:  Anupama graduated in May 2003 with a Bachelors degree in Economics from the University of Maryland, College Park. She graduated with a G.P.A of 3.7. Anupama was on the Behavioral and Social Sciences Deans list and the National Deans list. She was also nominated as an Undergraduate Research Assistant and she worked with Dr. Peter Coughlin on research projects on election models and majority voting. She has been awarded an assistantship as well as a full Dean’s Fellowship for her Ph.D studies. Her research interests include e-services and consumer economics.

Savannah Shi

2010 Candidate:  Savannah received her Bachelor of Business Administration from Fudan University (P.R.China) in July, 2006, with major in Marketing and minor in International Economics. Prior to joining the PhD program, she had an internship in Commercial Department of Siemens-VAI in United Kingdom (2004) and in Deloitte Touche Tohmastu in China (2005). Also from March-May 2006 in Fudan University, she worked as a research assistant in a MasterCard sponsored Marketing research project regarding out-bound traveling.

Here in Smith Business School Savannah is pursuing a PhD in Marketing with a minor in Economics. Her current research interest lies in quantitative market analysis as well as interdisciplinary nature of marketing and economics.

Hui-Hsing (Peggy) Tseng

2008 Candidate:  Peggy is a fourth year Ph.D. student. Her primary research interests include event scheduling and multichannel shopping. Her dissertation investigates managers' scheduling decisions and the impact of scheduling on sales. She has taught BMGT452 'Marketing Research Methods' in the undergraduate program. Prior to joining the PhD program, she received her M.S. degree with honor (Ronald B. Kaatz Humanitarian Award) in Integrated Marketing Communications (IMC) from Northwestern University and her B.S. degree in Business Administration from National Chengchi University, Taiwan.
