Abstract: What
constitutes effective leadership is
perhaps one of the oldest questions
in management. Yet, the evolving
nature of organizational designs is
rekindling interest in the topic.
More specifically, what is the role
of leadership in empowered designs;
and in particular, in team-based
empowered environments? In this
talk, I will share the results of a
series of studies that my colleagues
and I have conducted on this topic.
Some of this work has focused on
leadership influences on individual
employees, whereas other work has
examined the leader-team interface.
In all instances, leadership is
considered in context in combination
with other sources of influence. I
will conclude with a discussion of
leadership in the context of a newly
evolving organizational form called
multi-team systems.

variety of topics, mostly in the

American Psychological Association.
His current research interests
include models of training
effectiveness, team and multi-team
processes, and cross-level models of
organizational behavior. In
particular, his recent work has
focused on how team composition and
foundation activities influence team
performance trajectories over time,
how team training and other
interventions enhance team
effectiveness, and how
teams-of-teams coordinate their
joint efforts. He is also examining
the leader – member interface,
particularly in empowered team-based
organizational environments.
