Ken G.
Smith is the Dean's Chair and
Professor of Business Strategy
at the Robert H. Smith School of
Business, University of Maryland
at College Park. Ken is well
known for his research in the
areas of competition,
competitive advantage, and
strategic decision-making. Many
of his articles have been
published in leading scholarly
journals, such as the
Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Administrative
Science Quarterly, Management Science, Organization Science, and the
Strategic Management Journal. He
has also co-authored two books:
The Dynamics of Competitive
Strategy (Sage Publishing,
1992); and Strategy as Action:
Competitive Dynamics and
Competitive Advantage (Oxford
Publishing, 2005) and co-edited
the International Handbook of
Organizational Teamwork and
Cooperative Working (Wiley &
Sons, 2003), and Great Minds in
Management (Oxford Publishing,
2005).
Ken's
research has won a number of
awards, including the Best Paper
Award from the Academy of
Management Journal in 1999, Best
Published Paper Award from the
Organizational Behavior Division
of the Academy of Management in
2001, and the Best Paper Award
from the Journal of Management
in 2003. In 1991, Ken served as
a Fulbright Fellow in Strategic
Management at the University of
Limerick, Plassey, Ireland, he
was Visiting Professor of
Strategy in Spring 2000 at
INSEAD, France and was
Distinguished Visiting Scholar
at Tuck School of Business,
Dartmouth College, spring 2007.
Ken is
a three-time winner of Krowe
Award for outstanding teaching
from the Smith School of
Business, and was granted the
University of Maryland
Distinguished Scholar Teacher
Award in 1996. A former
entrepreneur, Ken was editor of
the Academy of Management Review
from 1996-1999, elected a fellow
of the Academy of Management in
1998 and from 2006-2007 served
as President of the Academy of
Management.
