Highlights
Philip T. Evers, associate
professor of logistics, serves as the
advisor for six regional roundtables of
the Council of Logistics Management, a
nonprofit organization of educators and
professionals promoting logistics in
manufacturing, transportation,
distribution, retailing, and consulting.
Logistics faculty member William DeWitt,
teaching professor, served on two of the
regional roundtables.
» In
2001, the
Supply Chain
Management Center
received a $2.2-million
contract from the U.S.
Department of Defense to
explore how the military
can optimize its supply
chain. Utilizing the
center’s advanced
simulation, planning,
and optimization tools,
the researchers will
provide a solution that
can be adapted by other
organizations with
large-scale operations.
RECOGNITION
- In spring
2002, the Transportation Journal
ranked the faculty #5
in terms of
research productivity from 1992-1998,
continuing a 30-year tradition of
outstanding scholarship
by the department.
- Assistant
Professor Deepak Somaya received the
best paper award in technology and
innovation from the Academy of
Management in 2001 for his paper,
“Strategic Determinants of Patent
Litigation Settlement Decisions in
Computers and Research Medicines.”
- The
department’s academic programs have
received high marks from students,
companies, and national business
publications. In 2002, U.S. News & World
Report ranked Smith’s MBA specialization
in international business #23, and the
undergraduate program in supply chain
management/logistics and electronic
commerce #6 and #4, respectively.
- Assistant
Professor Joshua Newberg received two
awards in 2002 from the Academy of Legal
Studies in Business: the Holmes/Cardozo
Award for Distinguished Conference Paper
at
the academy’s annual conference, and the
Ralph C. Hober Award for Outstanding
Article of the Year in the American
Business Law Journal. Newberg is the
first person in the 75-year history of
the organization to win both awards in
the same year.
