Research Interests: Offshoring and innovation;
international investment strategy.
Professor Vinod Jain is on the faculty of both the LBPP and M&O Departments,
where he teaches courses in strategy, global strategy, competing in emerging
markets, and international business. He is the founder and former director of
the Center for International Business Education & Research (CIBER), and an
affiliate professor in the Latin American Studies Center at the University of
Maryland. A true cosmopolitan and Fulbright Scholar, Vinod has lived and worked
in India, the United States, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, China, and the
Middle East.
Vinod has taught strategy on Smith School’s Executive MBA program in China
and Switzerland, and has been teaching the capstone strategic management course
on the Executive MBA program of the University of Lodz in Poland since 2005.
Most recently, he taught on the General Management Program for IT Executives at
the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore.
His current research involves measuring regional innovation in the United
States, a project funded partially by the IBM Center for the Business of
Government. Most recently, he co-authored a major study on “How America Benefits
from Economic Engagement with India” for the India-US World Affairs Institute,
in association with the University of Maryland and the Federation of Indian
Chambers of Commerce & Industry. He has been honored by the Governors of both
Ohio (2001) and Maryland (2004) for his services to their states.
Prior to returning to academia in 1990, Vinod worked in industry for some
fifteen years and held middle and senior executive positions, including Vice
President (Macmillan Publishers), Manager Coordination (Molins PLC), and
Marketing Research Executive (Coca-Cola). He serves on the Maryland/Washington
D.C. District Export Council, and is a member of the Academy of International
Business, Academy of Management, Mensa, and the Asia Society.
