reform.
Curt Grimm is Dean’s
Professor of Supply Chain and
Strategy at the Robert H. Smith
School of Business, University
of Maryland. From 1995-2003
Professor Grimm served as
Logistics, Business and Public
Policy department chair. He
received his Ph.D. in economics
from the University of
California-Berkeley, with
primary focus on industrial
organization.
Professor Grimm has conducted
extensive research in both
supply chain and strategic
management. His research has
focused on the interface of
business and public policy with
strategic management, with a
particular emphasis on
competition, competition policy,
deregulation and microeconomic
reform both in the U.S. and
overseas. This research has
resulted in four books and more
than 80 published articles.
Professor Grimm’s research in
supply chain has been centered
on transportation public policy.
More than two dozen publications
have dealt specifically with the
railroad industry, focusing
mainly on deregulation, mergers
and competition issues, and he
is recognized as a leading
authority in this area. During
1991-92 Professor Grimm was a
visiting research fellow at the
Australian Bureau of Transport
and Communication Economics and
led a team investigating the
economic effects of Australian
airline deregulation. Professor
Grimm has consulted for a number
of government agencies and
private firms, including the
Interstate Commerce Commission,
the Canadian Consumer and
Corporate Affairs Department,
and several railroads and
railroad shippers. In addition,
he has testified before Congress
on competitive effects of
railroad mergers.
Professor Grimm’s research in
strategic management has origins
in his participation since 1984
in the University of Maryland’s
Strategic Management Research
Group. This research initiative,
still active today, has
challenged traditional ways of
thinking about strategy and
competitive interaction. A new
competitive dynamics approach
has emerged, based on
Schumpeterian economics as a
theoretical lens. In this
perspective, strategy is a
firm’s actions and reactions,
with timing of actions crucial
to success. An action is defined
as a specific market move, such
as a price cut, a market
expansion, or a special
promotion designed to defend or
improve the firm’s competitive
position. In contrast, a
response is a market move taken
by a competing firm to
counteract the initial
competitive action. A body of
research has been developed
based on the actual competitive
actions and reactions of firms
across a broad range of
industries.
Professor Grimm’s strategy
research has been published in
leading scholarly journals such
as The Academy of Management
Journal, Management Science,
Organization Science, and
Strategic Management Journal .
He has co-authored two books on
competitive strategy. His
co-authored paper on “dethroning
industry leaders” won the Best
Paper Award from the Academy of
Management Journal in 2000.
Professor Grimm was a
recipient of the Allen J. Krowe
Award for Teaching Excellence in
1988, and has been named as a
Top 15% instructor twelve times.
