Business is still business, even in the Digital Economy. Solid business fundamentals continue to form the foundation for management decision making. Throughout the core students explore how IT and the Internet are changing business practices and creating new markets and new careers. The core also provides focused opportunities to develop the behavioral and cognitive skills critical to effective management, including leadership, teamwork, communication, and analysis.

Core Course Descriptions

BUSI 601 Communications Mastery Program I; (0.5 credits).  Part I of the Communications Mastery Program (CMP) consists of written and oral base-line assessments. The written assessment will occur during Orientation and the oral assessment during the first week of classes.  Students will meet with Program administrators to receive feedback on these assessments and create an individualized development plan.  Workshops and core course assignments, Smith-related activities and CMP assignments.

BUSI 602 MBA Case Competition; (0 credits). This is the first comprehensive test of students' thinking and analysis skills. At the start of the 5-day competition, teams composed of three to five MBA students are given a general management case that deals with broad strategy issues facing a company. The teams present their analyses and recommendations in written and oral presentations. Four teams advance to the final round, which is judged by a panel of business leaders who play the role of the company's board of directors.

BUSI 603 Communications Mastery Program II; (0.5 credits).   Part II of the Communications Mastery Program is a continuation of Phase  I, with the goal of assisting students in demonstrating mastery in their communication skills. The phase will allow students to further integrate  these skills into the Smith curriculum, including course electives, career development activities and the Group Consulting Project.

BUSI 698 MBA Field Project; (3 credits).  Experiential research project in the identification of management problems, the evaluation of alternative solutions, and the recommendation for management.

BUSI 610 Financial Reporting and Cost Accounting; (2 credits).  Overview of financial accounting, periodic financial statements and the financial reporting process. Introduction to cost accounting concepts that play a role in preparation of financial statements. Importance of financial statements as information source for creditors and investors and as a means by which managers can communicate information about their firms.

BUSI 611 Managerial Accounting; (2 credits).  Use of accounting data in corporate planning and control. Cost-volume- profit analysis, budgeting, pricing decisions and cost data, transfer pricing, activity-based management, performance measures, and standard costing.

BUSI 620 Strategic Information Systems; (2 credits).  Use of information technology to achieve competitive advantage, efficient operations, and effective decision making. Analysis of functions of information technology and its impact on competitive strategy and organizational operations.

BUSI 630 Data Models and Decisions; (3 credits).  To develop probabilistic and statistical concepts, methods and models through examples motivated by real-life data from business and to stress the role that statistics plays in the managerial decision making process.

BUSI 640 Financial Management; (3 credits).  Analysis of major corporate financial decisions using a market-oriented framework. Introduction to value techniques, capital budgeting principles and problems, asset valuation, operation and efficiency of financial markets, financing decisions, dividend policy and international finance. Additional topics, such as mergers and acquisitions may be covered.

BUSI 650 Marketing Management; (2 credits).  Analysis of marketing problems and evaluation of specific marketing efforts regarding the organization's products and services, pricing activities, channel selection, and promotion strategies in both domestic and international markets.

BUSI 662 Leadership and Teamwork; (2 credits).  Course examines concepts of team building and leadership which are critical to managerial success. Topics include leadership, decision making, communication and conflict, work motivation, building effective teams, and organizational change and culture.

BUSI 663 Managing Human Capital; (2 credits).  Systematic approaches to human resources management in the context of organizational strategy, as constrained by legal and economic factors.  Strategically aligned recruitment and screening systems, training and development, performance management, career management and reward systems.

BUSI 671 Supply Chain Logistics and Operations Management; (2 credits).  Supply chain management is an integrated approach to manage the total flow of a distribution channel from supplier to ultimate customer. Students are introduced to the concept of value-driven supply chains and its integration with operations.

BUSI 681 Managerial Economics and Public Policy; (2 credits).  Basic microeconomic principles used by firms, including supply and demand, elasticities, costs, productivity, pricing, market structure and competitive implications of alternative market structures. Market failures and government intervention. Public policy processes affecting business operations.

BUSI 683 The Global Economic Environment; (2 credits).  Relationship between national and international economic environments. Determinants of output, interest rates, prices and exchange rates. Analysis of effect of economic policies (fiscal, monetary, trade, tax) on the firm and the economy.

BUSI 690 Strategic Management; (2 credits).  Integrative strategic management focusing on strategy formulation and implementation in domestic and global settings. Industry and competitor analysis, industry and firm value chain, leadership, goal setting, organizational structure and culture. Case study approach to top management and organizational problems.
