Curriculum

Business is still business, even in
the Digital Economy. Solid business
fundamentals continue to form the
foundation for management decision
making. Throughout the core students
explore how IT and the Internet are
changing business practices and creating
new markets and new careers. The core
also provides focused opportunities to
develop the behavioral and cognitive
skills critical to effective management,
including leadership, teamwork,
communication, and analysis.
Core Course
Descriptions
BUSI 601 Communications Mastery
Program I; (0.5 credits).
Part I of the Communications Mastery
Program (CMP) consists of written and
oral base-line assessments. The written
assessment will occur during Orientation
and the oral assessment during the first
week of classes. Students will meet
with Program administrators to receive
feedback on these assessments and create
an individualized development plan.

Smith-related activities and CMP
assignments.

BUSI 602 MBA Case Competition;
(0 credits).
This is the first comprehensive test of
students' thinking and analysis skills.
At the start of the 5-day competition,
teams composed of three to five MBA
students are given a general management
case that deals with broad strategy
issues facing a company. The teams
present their analyses and
recommendations in written and oral
presentations. Four teams advance to the
final round, which is judged by a panel
of business leaders who play the role of
the company's board of directors.

BUSI 603 Communications Mastery
Program II; (0.5 credits).
Part II of the Communications Mastery
Program is a continuation of Phase I,
with the goal of assisting students in
demonstrating mastery in their
communication skills. The phase will
allow students to further integrate
these skills into the Smith curriculum,
including course electives, career
development activities and the Group
Consulting Project.

Experiential research project in the
identification of management problems,
the evaluation of alternative solutions,
and the recommendation for management.

Accounting; (2 credits). Overview of financial accounting, periodic financial statements and the
financial reporting process.
Introduction to cost accounting concepts
that play a role in preparation of
financial statements. Importance of
financial statements as information
source for creditors and investors and
as a means by which managers can
communicate information about their
firms.

Use of accounting data in corporate
planning and control. Cost-volume-
profit analysis, budgeting, pricing
decisions and cost data, transfer
pricing, activity-based management,
performance measures, and standard
costing.

decision making. Analysis of functions
of information technology and its impact

concepts, methods and models through
examples motivated by real-life data

decisions using a market-oriented
framework. Introduction to value
techniques, capital budgeting principles
and problems, asset valuation, operation

may be covered.

organizational strategy, as constrained

Supply Chain Logistics and Operations
Management; (2 credits). Supply chain management is an integrated approach to manage
the total flow of a distribution channel
from supplier to ultimate customer.
Students are introduced to the concept
of value-driven supply chains and its
integration with operations.

Policy; (2 credits). Basic microeconomic principles used by firms, including
supply and demand, elasticities, costs,
productivity, pricing, market structure

environments. Determinants of output,
interest rates, prices and exchange

focusing on strategy formulation and
