Topic: Internet Telephony and Wireless: Convergence or Competition?

WiFi empowers the mobile worker, while cellular communications have become ubiquitous in this modern age. What does the future hold in terms of wireless technologies, and how can it be taken advantage of to maximize value to the consumer while creating new profitable markets for organizations? Can internet telephony complement this new landscape and what are its impacts on the telecommunication industry? Lastly, the implications of FCC regulation will be discussed and its potential to mold the growth of the wireless and broadband industries.

BIN SHEN : Panelist
Senior Director, Broadband Management and Strategic Planning, Nextel

Bin Shen serves as the Senior Director of Broadband Management and Strategic Planning for Nextel Communications. In this role, he is responsible for leading Nextel Wireless Broadband Market Trial including business planning, product development and launch, on-going opertions, sales & markeintg, partnership managerment, and research and analysis. Prior to the wireless broadband program, Mr. Shen’s responsibility encompassed four core areas: Wireless Data Strategy, Smart Growth Planning, Customer Segmentation and Channel Strategy, and Strategic Partnership Development.

Before joining Nextel, Mr. Shen was a Manager with Deloitte Consulting’s Communications Strategy Practice. Mr. Shen was responsible for sales, management and delivery of consulting services to a wide range of distinguished clients that included SBC, BellSouth, Sprint, Bell Canada/Bell Mobility, Nextel, Verio, Californian Casualty/Property Company. During his consulting career, Mr. Shen managed numerous cross-functional client and consultant teams in the areas of organizational transformation, market entry, channel development, product portfolio management, and value-based management implementation. His primary areas of focus were customer segmentation, acquisition and retention, product portfolio management, channel development and converging technologies.

From 1995 to 1997, Mr. Shen served as the Worldwide Strategic Marketing Manager for Eastman Kodak Company’s Business Imaging Systems with responsibilities in strategic planning, marketing program, new product development, and strategic partnership. Bin has an MBA from the University of Rochester and a BS degree in Finance from Golden Gate University.

STEPHEN WELLMAN: Panelist
Director of Editorial, Fierce Markets

Stephen Wellman heads the editorial department and also serves as editor of FierceWireless, the wireless industry's daily monitor service that helps executives stay on top of the wireless and mobile Internet market.. A tireless telecom buff, Mr.Wellman frequently comments for the BBC, Wired News, and other media outlets, and often chairs or moderates at conferences, most recently Carriers World in London. Before joining FierceMarkets, Stephen spearheaded editorial initiatives at several technology companies.

A native of Pikeville, Kentucky, Stephen is a graduate the University of Chicago where he founded The Chicago Criterion newspaper. He enjoys fishing, French cooking, and arcane academic trivia.

MARK DESAUTELS : Panelist
Vice President, Wireless Internet Development, Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association

Mark Desautels was named Vice President, Wireless Internet Development, at CTIA upon its merger with the Wireless Data Forum in January 2001. Before that, he served as President & CEO of the Wireless Data Forum, beginning in January 2000, after serving for two years as its first Managing Director. Previously, he was the Assistant to the Director, Office of Intergovernmental Relations, Congressional Budget Office (CBO), where he was the agency press spokesperson and chief liaison officer. Desautels helped design, develop, implement, and manage the agency’s Web site and was the agency’s representative to the Legislative Branch Legislative Information Systems development team.

Prior to joining CBO, Desautels was the Washington-based business and economics reporter for a chain of business news weeklies owned by Scripps-Howard, covering the telecommunications industry and other beats. He also covered Capitol Hill for Thomson Newspapers. Desautels has a Master of International Public Policy degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Gettysburg College.

THOMAS M HEACOCK : Panelist
Higher Education Advocate, Avaya

Tom comes to us from Avaya’s Headquarters in Basking Ridge, NJ, where he is the Higher Education Advocate in the Solutions Marketing organization, focusing on targeted solutions for State & Local Government, K-12 Education and Higher Education. Prior to supporting sales to Higher Education, Tom was on the Industry Marketing team for channel marketing where he received the “Achiever’s Club” award for sales operations support.

Tom joined Avaya in 2000, after 24 years with the University of Maryland. The first 10 years of his career was at the University Hospital and professional school campus in Baltimore, Maryland and the last 14 years at the State of Maryland’s flagship campus at College Park. Tom was the Director of Networking and Telecommunications Engineering and the project manager for the $32M Avaya communications system installation, the largest of its kind. He managed the 29,000-line system, 19,000 Intuity voice mailboxes and 19,000 Ethernet connections with a small group of innovative engineers, technicians and support staff.

Tom is CEO of J.T.S. Communications, LLC, a consulting firm that specializes in practical leadership skills, technical solutions and project management for the IT manager. Tom is also the co-author of a book called “Survival Tips and Techniques for Successful Telecommunications Administrators”.

Tom is on the National Advisory Board for the National Workforce Center for Emerging Technologies that help to establish standards for IT curricula for higher education.

Tom holds a Bachelors of Science degree from Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. and resides with his family in Hagerstown, Maryland.

VINAY PATEL : Panelist
Senior Marketing Director, Hughes Network Systems

Vinay Patel has been involved in the wireless telecommunications industry for the last 20 years. His early experience includes sales and applications engineering for two-way radio systems, specialized mobile radio (trunk radio), wireless data, and paging systems. At HNS, Mr. Patel developed expertise in the design of VSAT systems, mobile and fixed wireless systems, and PMP. As Sr. Marketing Director for HNS’ PMP product group, Vinay has secured LMDS clients in Colombia, Peru, Poland, and most recently in the Czech Republic. Vinay received his Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering and Masters in Business Administration degrees from the University of Maryland.

DR. HENRY LUCAS : Moderator
Professor of Information Systems, Robert H. Smith School of Business

Professor Lucas’ research interests include the impact of information technology on organizations, IT in organization design, electronic commerce, and the value of information technology. A prolific researcher, he has authored 11 books as well as monographs and more than 70 articles in professional periodicals on the impact of technology, information technology in organization design, the return on investments in technology, implementation of information technology, expert systems, decision-making for technology, and information technology and corporate strategy. His most recent books include Information Technology and the Productivity Paradox: Assessing the Value of Investing in IT (Oxford University Press, 1999) and The T-Form Organization: Using Technology to Design Organizations for the 21st Century (Jossey-Bass, and Strategies for E-Commerce and the Internet, MIT Press. 2002.
