Global Business Exchange Programs

Incoming Exchange Students

Welcome to University of Maryland! If you are a prospective student, we encourage you to learn about the Smith School and our excellent offerings. If you have already been accepted, we are excited to have you be a part of our vibrant academic environment, and we look forward to your contributions and varying perspectives on business practices.

If you are a prospective exchange student, please ensure first with your exchange program coordinator that you are attending a partner school. We will help you with the Smith registration process as a team. Any questions, please email Lisa Barnard.

Application Deadlines: For Fall 2008 - March 3, 2008

I. Application Procedures

All students must complete requirements A through E before you can be admitted to the University of Maryland and your visa process started.

A. Application Form

B. Evidence of Good Academic Standing

Undergraduate applicants should include academic records and a letter of recommendation from your University. Graduate applicants should include academic records and two letters of recommendation. Applicants must be able to demonstrate they have fulfilled prerequisite courses equivalent to any detailed on the course description prior to registration.

C. Evidence of Financial Support

In order for the University to issue papers for you to receive a visa we must have evidence of financial support. Our exchange agreement with your university provides for a tuition waiver. However, you must show evidence of financial support to cover other living costs. The amount for one semester during the 2008-2009 academic year is $8992.00. This is an estimate of costs for housing, books, insurance, meals, and other living expenses. A financial support form is located in the attached application.

You will need to certify that you have sufficient funds for the expenses not expressly provided by the exchange. If it is your parents who are funding you, they should sign the application on the appropriate page (indicating the amount.) You will also need a letter from their bank verifying their ability to provide these funds. If you are to be supported by your government, enclose verification of the arrangement. All of this is explained on the application.

D. TOEFL Test Results

All students at Maryland are expected to read, write, and speak English fluently. International students must demonstrate a proficiency in the English language by taking the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the IELTS. Applicants must achieve the following scores to qualify for admission. For the TOEFL, applicants must score 575 or above on the paper-based exam or 233 or above on the computer-based exam, with no sectional score below 50 for either test.

Applicants who take the IELTS must score a minimum of 6.5.

You must submit your actual TOEFL report.  Institutional score reports marked unofficial cannot be accepted.

Given enough notice prior to the application cycle, applicants whose scores are less than the minimum may be considered for provisional admission requiring:

  • A reevaluation of English skills upon arrival at College Park.
  • The successful completion of a semi-intensive program of English study at the university’s Maryland English Institute (MEI) during the summer semester, if the results of reevaluation indicate more language training is needed.

You should take the TOEFL on a date that includes the Test of Written English (TWE). If you are unable to do so, or if your TWE score is less than 4.0, and you are admitted to the business school, you will be required to write an essay during orientation.

To obtain an application for TOEFL, write: TOEFL, P.O. Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541-6151, USA; www.toefl.org .

When requesting that official scores be sent, please refer to the University of Maryland institutional code 5814. A copy of your TOEFL report must be included in your application. TOEFL exemptions are granted to students from HKUST.

II. ADMINISTRATIVE ISSUES

The University of Maryland is a large school and many arrangements are handled by computer. Once you are admitted, you may receive routine mailings asking for deposits or payment of bills. You may disregard these.

At a later date we will be sending you more specific information regarding arrival, orientation, course and registration information, and housing application forms.

After your application process has been completed we will send you the DS-2019 with which you can obtain your visa.
