Undergraduate Global Business Courses 2011-12
Spring: January 2012
Spring Break: March 2012
Summer: May-June 2012
Summer 2: August 2012
BMGT Short-Term Courses Abroad
The
Smith School offers a number of undergraduate short-term courses abroad each
year. These 3-credit electives allow you to explore business in another country
for 7 - 14 days and engage in a learning opportunity unlike any classroom
experience. The travel portion of the courses occur during the school breaks in
winter (December/January), spring (March) and summer (May and/or August).
Some comments from evaluations:
“I feel this course and what I learned not only
differentiate me as a global talent but also enrich me with insights about how I
might take advantage of and develop business opportunities abroad.”
“It was a great way to expand my horizons and integrate the rest of my degree
into the real world.”
“This course was unforgettable and one of the greatest experiences of my life!”
Prior to departure, students will spend 3 hours of course time focused on cross-cultural
communication, preparing for travel, and an introduction to the course topic and
country. While abroad, the itinerary incorporates two or more company visits per
workday, as well as various activities that facilitate cultural understanding. Most
courses have a detailed topic, but all courses examine the macro picture and give
insight into how to do business in the country or region.
Tuition and Fees
All tuition and fees for each course are bundled into one program fee. While
the fee varies depending on individual program components and the destination, courses
generally range from $1000 - $3000. All program fees include:
- 3 credits of tuition for an upper-level BMGT elective
- Lodging in a 3 or 4 star hotel for the duration of the course (students will
be assigned to double rooms)
- Local transportation to company visits and cultural activities
- Cultural and business excursions as outlined in the syllabus
- Group meals as outlined in the itinerary
The program fee does NOT cover airfare to the country. Airfare/train fares
for intra-country travel may or may not be included – check your particular
program. Students are also responsible for obtaining and paying for their own
visa and/or entry fee where applicable.
There is also a $250 study abroad fee that funds the Education Abroad emergency
response program and general administration.
Students will be billed for all tuition and fees by the Bursar’s office and it
will appear on the monthly billing statement just as any other 3-credit course.
Scholarships
The Provost has again generously provided the Smith School with scholarship
funds for BMGT students who have never been abroad on a UMD program before and
who have not previously studied abroad or transferred in credits from a foreign
university. This scholarship is also available to Quest students and to College
Park Scholars who are in the Business, Society and Economy (BSE) program. This
$750 scholarship will be provided automatically to qualified students.
Smith School Students (and BSE & Quest) may also apply for a limited number
of $2,012 awards being offered for all 2012 short-term programs. Details to
follow soon.
Students may apply for additional scholarships through
Education Abroad.
Enrollment
To enroll in an upcoming course, please click on the individually listed
course titles or go to the University of Maryland
Education Abroad
Office website. Students should not purchase airfare until a course is
confirmed and, after that time, students are highly encouraged to purchase
refundable airfare tickets. When maximum enrollment is met for a course,
students will be placed on a waitlist and offered the opportunity to enroll as
seats become available.
Student Pledge
All students are required to sign this Pledge prior to departure.
When I travel abroad, I serve as a representative for the United
States of America, the University of Maryland, the Robert H. Smith School of
Business, the Office of Global Programs, my faculty leader(s), my fellow
students and myself. As such, I pledge to take responsibility for my actions at
all times. When I travel abroad, I understand that I continue to be bound by the
University’s Code of Conduct. I understand that failure to respect the trust
given to me will reflect poorly on all of the above, and may also jeopardize my
grade for the course(s) and my acceptance into future education abroad
experiences with the University.

Other Notes
The Office of Global Programs reserves the right to cancel any classes not
meeting enrollment requirements or to destinations that have become too dangerous
for travel. We work closely with the University of Maryland Education Abroad Office
to carefully monitor world events in such cases.
The course portion abroad is for three credits. Students are encouraged to
travel before or after the course to pursue their own interests as the classes are
intensely scheduled to achieve the three credits and do not include a lot of free
time.
