To many students, Singapore is a small dot on the world map. To those who look for models of success in public policy, business, education, community development, crime control and urban planning, Singapore is a role model. In less than 50 years, Singapore transformed from a tiny port on the southern edge of Malaysia into one of the most developed Southeast Asian nations.

This course provides a general understanding of doing business in Singapore with a focus on innovation. The course will also cover culture, history, government, economic development, and social development. A previous trip to Singapore and Malaysia included visits to the Port of Singapore and the world’s largest container terminal hub, Singapore ExxonMobil plant (the world’s largest integrated chemical and oil plant in the world), Discovery Communications, Novartis, Hewlett Packard, Housing Development Board, the Petronas Towers, Accenture, FedEx, Tiger Brewery, Royal Selangor, the Singapore Economic Development Board, the Batu Caves and Kampung Morten.

Most of the time will be spent in Singapore with a shorter excursion into Malaysia. Students are expected to attend pre-departure meetings and complete the required readings prior to departure. The course has a comprehensive set of readings required of all participants regardless of course registration. This course can be used to meet the advanced studies core University requirement.

The global immersion experiences are three-credit courses and typically meet degree requirements (advanced studies requirement of the University, BMGT major requirements, electives, etc,). Some courses may be eligible to fulfill major-specific requirements (confirm with your Smith School academic advisor). Students are expected to attend pre-departure meetings and complete the required readings prior to departure. The course has a comprehensive set of readings required of all participants regardless of course registration. Additional readings are assigned based on type of course registration. Mandatory pre-departure meetings will be scheduled.
