In 2009 China surpassed Germany as the world’s top exporter of goods and rose to the third largest economy after the US and Japan. The engine of this economic powerhouse is found in southeast China. This course will give QUEST students the chance to examine first-hand the manufacturing, consulting, and design firms of southeast China with visits to Shanghai, Shenzen, and Hong Kong. Particular attention will be paid to the use of systems thinking and strategies designed to improve production quality.

The course will start in Shanghai, the largest city in China, to examine how this metropolis has become the economic center of the country. We will then travel to Shenzen which achieved special status in the 1980s allowing it to receive foreign investment and relaxed international trade restrictions. Shenzen is now the headquarters of many high-tech companies including Lenovo and Hon Hai Group which manufactures most of the iPods and iPhones in the world. Finally, we will travel to Hong Kong to explore how and why the Chinese government has allowed this former British colony to thrive economically with minimal intervention.

Multiple business visits will take place in this course focusing on the above areas. There will also be scheduled cultural excursions and time to sightsee with the group or on your own.
