Chile
is a beautiful, exciting country renowned for its economic stability in the
South American region. It leads South and Latin American nations in
competitiveness, quality of life, economic freedom, and boasts a low perception
of corruption. Some of Chile's famous exports include grapes, excellent wines,
and fine fish. Chile's progressive economic policies mean that the U.S. is a
major destination for Chilean products and services and this class will examine
the highly professional and reliable supply chain network and marketing
strategies that contribute to the country's wealth.
In addition to the focus on supply chain and marketing strategies adopted by
Chilean companies to support their domestic and global expansion strategies,
students will explore businesses in several disciplines and learn about the
country's culture and history. Students will hear from U.S. companies that have
engaged in Foreign Direct Investment in Chile, and again the focus will be on
the supply chain and marketing strategies adopted by these companies to ensure
their success in this foreign market.
We will explore the development and performance of the Chilean economy in a
world continuing to undergo rapid globalization. Capitalizing upon its stature
as an economically and politically stable country with an abundance of strong
market segments, Chile continues to expand its business presence globally. An
integrated set of course readings, cultural excursions, and business visits will
facilitate the learning described above. Students will come back with an
understanding of the political and economic history of Chile and its place in
the global economy. The visit should also provide the students with an idea of
the importance of foreign investment in the region. Students are expected to
attend pre-departure meetings and complete required readings and deliverables in
a timely fashion.
Note:
Please do not purchase airfare until class is confirmed. Students
are advised by UMD Education Abroad to purchase refundable airline tickets, and
we recommend STA Travel.
The UMD drop schedule and refund schedule apply for the one-credit BUSI788
course. There is an additional $500 penalty if you drop the course after the
course is confirmed.
A visa is required for US citizens, and costs around US$140 - $160. Students
of other nationalities should check the consular office for visa information and
requirements. Your passport must be valid for 6 months after your return date, and
you should have 2 blank visa pages available. We will send the letter of invitation
you need after the course is confirmed.
The time abroad IS the class and any instances of: being late and therefore
delaying the group, noise in hotel hallways, damage to hotel rooms, hung-over
behavior, sleeping during meetings or public displays of affection will be
frowned upon as it would for any business traveler on meetings or conferences
abroad. You are expected to incorporate professionalism while abroad, and
professionalism is part of your total grade. It is our intent to develop world
citizens and savvy business travelers, and the courses abroad should be
undertaken as serious academic endeavors.
