2010-2011
Global Business Short-Term Study Abroad Courses
Courses abroad are comprised of a BUSI788 one-credit class that takes place
in the DC metro area and a three-credit BUSI798 course that takes place abroad.
The BUSI788 course educates students prior to departure about the culture,
history and economic climate of their destination; students research the
companies they will visit while abroad, and make presentations or other
deliverables that analyze current situations in their chosen region and country.
While abroad on the associated BUSI798 course, the itinerary frequently
incorporates two or more company visits per workday, as well as various cultural
activities that facilitate understanding. Most courses have a detailed topic,
but all courses examine the macro picture and give insight into how to do
business in the country or region.
The BUSI788 one-credit class serves as the prerequisite for the three-credit
BUSI798 time abroad and is mandatory. Each BUSI788 is coupled with an associated
BUSI798 course. For example, students wanting to travel to Dubai will register
for BUSI788M on Testudo, and then will be automatically registered for BUSI798M
abroad.
Students in the BUSI788 sections will be registered automatically for their
associated BUSI798 class abroad, and only those in the BUSI788 course can be
registered for its BUSI798 counterpart.
Tuition and Fees
Students will be billed for the BUSI788, one-credit portion of the course
along with other fall/spring classes:
- BMGT fees apply for full-time students for BUSI788/BUSI798 courses.
- Students will be billed for the BUSI788 one-credit class along with other
fall/spring classes. Please be advised that these classes are on the UMD
drop/add/withdraw schedule and dropping the class will incur fees according to
that schedule. In addition, a fee of $500 may be assessed if a student drops the
course after we have made financial commitments to their presence abroad.
Refund schedule:
Fall 2010 |
Spring 2010.
- The
BUSI788 course is followed by the winter/summer BUSI798 course. Those in BUSI788
courses are automatically registered for BUSI798. You will be billed for the
program fee and three credits about two months prior to departure.
- The program fee for AY2010/11 is $3000; three credits tuition for AY2011
is $4065; total cost is $7065. The program fee covers
hotel room, some group meals, local transportation to company visits,
professor expenses and other services. The program fee does not cover
tuition for credits and does not cover airfare to the country nor in-country
airfare/train fares.
- We reserve the right to cancel any classes not meeting enrollment
requirements. The University of Maryland Study Abroad Office carefully
monitors world events and reserves the right to cancel courses to
destinations that have become too dangerous for travel.
- Smith MBA students may take no more than
two global studies courses
towards their degree.
Note: The course portion abroad is for three credits. Students are encouraged to
travel before or after the course to pursue their own interests as the classes
are intensely scheduled to achieve the three credits and do not include a lot of
free time.
