Doing Business in China: China's Energy and Environmental Issues - Three Gorges Dam

This course will examine how China's unprecedented economic development has impacted the country's energy demands and environmental protection efforts. Students will gain insight into the environmental and social impact of rapid economic growth on daily life in China. The class will look specifically at how coal mining at how coal mining is used to power Beijing, and recent developments in alternative energy sourcing. The course will also address environmental issues such as water scarcity and pollution.

Students will learn about the coal industry while visiting one of the biggest coal mines in northern China, alternative energy developments by visiting a eco-power station in Beijing, and will visit the Three Gorges Dam to look at water and energy issues. Students will also learn about water pollution from the many factories driving China's growth; students will visit a water reclamation plant, visit villages that have benefited from the South-North Water Diversion Project, and discuss water distribution with an expert.
