As the United States Government moves to support its financial system and
auto industry from collapse, citizens either cheer or fear the outcome. European
countries are more familiar with government involvement in the marketplace; as
Eastern Europe continues to adjust to its move away from a command economy and
Western European governments continue to support a diverse array of industries
and healthcare models, there are learning opportunities in reviewing the
different systems, histories and outcomes.
With contributions from the University of Maryland School Government and
Politics, this class will look at a variety of industries through this
governmental lens. We aim to examine the European integration and Eastern vs.
Western differences, as well as the impact of economic events of 2009 on the
European market. We anticipate taking a close look at the impact of the mortgage
crisis on banking and investing in Europe, European approaches to health case,
sustainable energies and the automobile industry.
Students will travel to Frankfurt, Germany; Bratislava, Slovakia; and likely
have a day in Vienna, Austria.
