Global Business Courses 2009-10
BUSI788/BUSI798 Short-Term Courses Abroad
Courses abroad are comprised of a BUSI788 one-credit class that takes place
in the DC metro area and a three-credit BUSI798 course that takes place abroad.
The BUSI788 course educates students prior to departure about the culture,
history and economic climate of their destination; students research the
companies they will visit while abroad, and make presentations or other
deliverables that analyze current situations in their chosen region and country.
While abroad on the associated BUSI798 course, the itinerary frequently
incorporates two or more company visits per workday, as well as various cultural
activities that facilitate understanding. Most courses have a detailed topic,
but all courses examine the macro picture and give insight into how to do
business in the country or region.
The BUSI788 one-credit class serves as the prerequisite for the three-credit
BUSI798 time abroad and is mandatory. Each BUSI788 is coupled with an associated
BUSI798 course. For example, students wanting to travel to Dubai will register
for BUSI788M on Testudo, and then will be automatically registered for BUSI798M
abroad.
Students in the BUSI788 sections will be registered automatically for their
associated BUSI798 class abroad, and only those in the BUSI788 course can be
registered for its BUSI798 counterpart.
Accelerated MBA Students in their first year of the program are only eligible
to take BUSI788C, Doing Business in China: China's Energy and Environmental
Issues, due to scheduling constraints.
DC Weekend First & Second Year Students with finals May 22 are eligible to
take BUSI788B Brazil and BUSI788E Europe, and are approved to arrive May 23.
Those interested in 788I have been approved to arrive in Israel Sunday rather
than Saturday.
Any student planning on taking Summer I weekend courses that begin May 29 are
only eligible to take BUSI788C and BUSI788I due to scheduling constraints.
Tuition and Fees
Students will be billed for the BUSI788,
one-credit portion of the course along with other fall/spring classes:
You will register for the one-credit fall/spring BUSI788 course. Billing for
this portion of the course will be for one-credit's tuition, one credit's BMGT
fees and the site fee, as with all of your other fall/spring courses. The
BUSI788 course is followed by the winter/summer BUSI798 course.
There will be three billing lines for the BUSI798,
three-credit portion of the course:
- Study Abroad Tuition: $5300 (three credits and the
program fee for hotel, etc);
Note: Tuition for the Summer 1 session of Doing Business in the EU
is $5800
- BMGT Fee for three credits: ~$790, depending on your
program (BA, SG, CP, DC)
- Study Abroad Fee: $250
- A fee of $500 will be assessed if students drop the course after we have
made financial commitments for their presence abroad; you will be notified
well in advance as to this drop deadline.
The BUSI798 tuition/program fee covers the three credits abroad, hotel room,
some group meals, local transportation to company visits and cultural
activities, and any tickets, etc. for cultural activities that are integral to
the course. Tuition does NOT
cover airfare to the country nor any airfare/train fares for intra-country
travel.
We reserve the right to cancel any classes not meeting enrollment
requirements. The University of Maryland Study Abroad Office carefully monitors
world events and reserves the right to cancel courses to destinations that have
become too dangerous for travel.
Smith MBA students may take no more
than two global studies courses towards their degree.
Guests
Guests are welcome on the courses; guests may not attend company visits but are
invited to the cultural activities and group dinners. We will issue an invoice
to reimburse UMD for associated costs such as the hotel room, any cultural
tickets, group meals, etc.
Note
The course portion abroad is for three credits. Students are encouraged to travel before or after
the course to pursue their own interests as the classes are
intensely scheduled to achieve the three credits and do not include a lot of
free time.
