Postscript on coursework in graduate school:
A typical graduate student in economics spends at-least one and half to two good years in extensive coursework. In finance we spend two years in coursework. While often PhD students feel like asking, "so when does the research start", the informed opinion sides along undertaking extensive coursework. One school of thought says, "There is no end to courses one can take, so start biting research questions as soon as you can think of one." I don't think the two school of thoughts are mutually exclusive.
