Areas Of Expertise
Professor Karaesmen works in the area of operations management, with
applications in revenue management, service operations and supply chain
management. She is interested in decision making under uncertainty. Her
dissertation addresses overbooking decisions with substitutable resources as
well as combined inventory allocation and overbooking decisions in the travel
and hospitality industries.
Professional Activities
Professor Karaesmen was on the faculty of Carnegie Mellon University's Graduate
School of Industrial Administration prior to joining University of Maryland,
where she taught courses on Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Service
Operations and Revenue Management at undergraduate, MBA and PhD levels She has
worked on projects for apparel and retail, telecommunications and aviation
companies. Her ongoing research on design of dynamic service networks is
supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Professor
Karaesmen has presented her work at several conferences and has been a reviewer
for top academic journals. Professor Karaesmen's paper "Overbooking with
Substitutable Inventory Classes" was awarded the second prize in Manufacturing
and Service Operations Management (MSOM) Society's Student Paper Competition in
1999.
