Program Requirements
Major Specification

For the next three credits (and in substitution for the above courses, with departmental permission), students may choose from among other department courses that make sense from a programmatic point of view, including:

BMGT 866 Seminar in Work Groups and Teams
BMGT 828 Independent Study
PSYC I/O Psychology courses (with departmental permission)

For the final three credits, students must take one of the following strategic management courses:

BMGT 808b Seminar in the Scope of the Enterprise
BMGT 808c Seminar on Cognition in Strategic Management
BMGT 808d Seminar in Organizational Theory
BMGT 808e Special Topics

In addition, knowledge of the content and orientation of BMGT 663 (Introduction to the Management of Human Resources) is a requirement for all HRM doctoral students. This requirement can be met in one of three ways: (1) through prior equivalent coursework; (2) through auditing the course, without taking the exams; or (3) through taking the course for credit.

Minor Specification
A variety of minors are possible both within and outside the Smith School.
One option is to select the Management Research minor offered by the M&O department. This minor is composed of four courses including two strategy doctoral courses and two organizational behavior doctoral courses.

Another option is that students can elect (with department permission) to take a different minor, such as Information Technology (IT), Entrepreneurship, I/O Psychology, Economics, etc. This minor must fit the following conditions: First, the courses that make up the minor must be a PhD level research courses—rather than M.B.A. or master's level. Second, the courses should enhance the student's ability to conduct research in his/her major area of concentration. Finally, the course should help to build a multi-disciplinary approach to research. This option can often encompass a selection of courses both inside and outside the department.

MBA Core Requirement
Two courses required from the MBA core, with waiver of requirement for students with an MBA degree, a Bachelor's degree in Business, or a minor in the core.

Economics Requirement
One graduate course in economics is required.

Research Methodology
Students must take Research Methodology (BMGT 880).

Research Working Paper Requirement
Students must submit a satisfactory research working paper, usually completed by the end of the third year.
