8th Annual China Business Plan Competition

January 5-13, 2013

Experience China, one of the world's fastest growing economies with fellow UMD students and compete for $10,000 in cash prizes at the 8th Annual China Business Plan Competition (CBPC). Since 2006, over $200,000 has been awarded to promising entrepreneurs in a competition co-hosted by the Smith School’s Dingman Center and Peking University’s Guanghua School of Management. The CBPC is held as part of a week-long global studies trip and satisfies 3 credits of the Smith Experience MBA curriculum. The competition and trip is open to all UMD students at any degree level.

Entrepreneurial Skills

  • Gain exposure to and interact with early-stage firms and entrepreneurs at company visits and group meals
  • Develop a business idea that is based in China or leverages Chinese resources and present it to expert judges for feedback

International Experience

  • Compete against top Chinese MBA students in the 8th Annual China Business Plan Competition for a chance to win cash prizes
  • Learn about Chinese history and culture through sightseeing tours and company visits

Schedule & Costs

  • Fall 2012 (BUSI 788K): Pre-travel classes and advisory sessions to prepare for the China Business Plan Competition ~ Smith School MBA/MS students wishing to receive credit for the trip should register for BUSI 788K on Testudo. You will automatically be registered for the 2 credit winter travel (BUSI 798K)
  • January 5-13, 2013 (BUSI 798K): One week trip to Beijing, China. The itinerary includes the competition, company visits, sightseeing and cultural activities.
  • Program Fee: $2,000 plus three credits tuition for MBA/MS students (total for BUSI 788 and BUSI 798) which includes hotel, ground transportation, sightseeing and most meals. There is an additional $250 study abroad fee which goes directly to the campus office to maintain the emergency plan. Airfare is not included in the program fee and can be purchased for $1,000-1,500.

Entry Requirements

  • The competition is open to international teams of MBA students interested in new venture creation in China
  • Teams (of no more than 4 people) are encouraged but individuals can enter the competition
  • Entries must address a business opportunity for China or one that leverages Chinese resources.
  • Each entry consists of a six-minute PowerPoint presentation in English that answers the following:
  • Problem -Market -Solution -Team
  • Competition -Risk of Viability -Use of Funds

Judging

  • Teams will present their ideas before a panel of judges from the Dingman Center and venture capital firms and successful businesses from China and the United States.
  • Winners will be determined by their ability to meet defined criteria, present and respond to questions—as well as capacity to implement the business idea.
  • Awards will be distributed in cash during the competition event
