Travel to China with the Dingman Center,
January 16-22, 2011: BUSI 758

The Dingman Center has partnered with Beida University and the Guanghua School of Management to provide a unique classroom experience for MBA students. BUSI 758 will be offered as a joint class between MBA students at Beida and Smith. Accepted students will be enrolled in BUSI 758 in the B term in the fall of 2010. The entire class will then travel to China from January 16-22, 2011 to participate alongside their Chinese classmates in the Dingman Center’s Annual China Business Plan Competition.

Commercialize a University of Maryland Technology!
BUMO 758K: Technology Commercialization

What exactly is intellectual property?  How do I take my idea to conceptualization? What strategies should I pursue in order to commercialize my idea? If these are some of the questions that you have in your mind then BUMO 758K is for you. Students will get an opportunity to learn about intellectual property and different technology commercialization strategies and apply this knowledge by developing commercialization plans for real-world technologies developed at the University of Maryland. Teams propose a commercialization strategy to investors and partners. Successful students may also elect to pursue additional funding through the Dingman Center to support further commercialization efforts.

BUSI 771: New Venture Financing
Shady Grove—Thursday Evening

This practical course is designed primarily to improve the student’s ability to finance a new or growing independent or corporate venture. Core topics include bootstrapping, government loans and grants, commercial banking, angel investing, middle market private placements, DPOs, venture capital, and small IPOs. A review of financial terms, statements, capital structure, valuation, deal structure, due diligence, and term sheets is provided.

Dingman Jumpstart: A 2-Week Entrepreneurship Bootcamp!
Applications are now accepted. August 16-27, 2010

Dingman Jumpstart is a 2-week intensive bootcamp for students and recent alums who want to experience entrepreneurship from idea generation all the way through testing business model and launching their business. Entrepreneurial skills and thinking are indispensable whether one is running their own business or a department within a larger company. More about the program and application instructions are here.

CAN Breakfast Update

The Dingman Center’s Capital Access Network (CAN) is screening regional early-stage companies and coaching entrepreneurs in an effort to successfully connect them with the angel investor community. Read more about exciting new startups that presented to CAN investors during the last breakfast.

Portfolio Company Update: Gill Grilling

 

Brian Gill, founder and owner of Gill Grilling was named 2010 Maryland Young Entrepreneur of the Year by the Small Business Administration.  Gill Grilling Company began in 2002 in the summer before the founder’s senior year at the University of Maryland. Today, Gill Grilling Company serves 15 chapters at the University of Maryland’s College Park Campus. Come to meet Brian Gill at the BB&T Business Invitational exhibit on May 7th!

Portfolio Company Update: Degree Energy Services goes to CMU and MIT

Last month Degree Energy Services, a startup here at the Dingman Center went to Carnegie Mellon University to participate in the McGinnis Venture Competition. Teams from all parts of the country came in to pitch their business plan. The team also went to MIT for the Clean Energy Prize Mentor's dinner to mingle with some of the bigwigs in the Clean Energy field. For more details click here.
