Entrepreneur Weekly Interviews Dingman Director Asher Epstein

December 5, 2005 - Entrepreneur Weekly recently interviewed Dingman Director Asher Epstein.  The topic under discussion was the Dingman Center's unique role in assisting local entrepreneurs for the past twenty years.  Mr. Epstein explained that the Dingman Center tries to spot market opportunities and then make sure that entrepreneurs are aware of them.  Several success stories were mentioned, such as Kevin Plank's Under Armour, Zoey Rawlins' Shop DC, as well as the Hook & Ladder Brewing Company. Gazette.Net Profiles Hook & Ladder Brewing Company as a Dingman Success Story

November 30, 2005 - Gazette.Net profiled Hook & Ladder Brewing Company, explaining that the Fleischer brothers got their idea to start their own brewing company during the microbrew craze of the 90s.  After moving here from California, Matt Fleischer became involved with Dingman Center. Matt graduated in May with a master's degree and $10,000 startup money from the center, and adapted the business model he had out West for the East Coast beer drinker. [ Full Story ]

Maryland International Features the Dingman Center's China Business Plan Competition

October 13, 2005 - The Dingman Center's China business plan competition was mentioned in the Fall I edition of Maryland International.  The competition, which was co-sponsored with Zero2IPO, will strengthen the business school's presence in China fast-growing economy.

“We recognize the importance of having a business presence in China,” emphasizes [Dingman director] Epstein, “and want to share best practices in entrepreneurship gained from a twenty-year operating history at the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship.” [ Full Story ]

Maryland to Open Second Business Office in China

October 5, 2005 - The state Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) has opened its second office in China, and Dingman Center fellow Dan Goodman was interviewed about it.  "It's not surprising that [DBED] is opening another office," said Dan Goodman.

The Shanghai office teamed up with the Smith School this year to manage the school's executive MBA program in Shanghai. The school launched the same program in Beijing in 2003.  DBED "has been very aggressive" in expanding Maryland's presence," Goodman said.  "I think it's a good thing." [ Full Story ]

Chinese Entrepreneurs Win US$45K in Smith China Business Plan Competition

September 27, 2005 - Three emerging entrepreneurs just moved a step closer to being business titans of tomorrow. Winners of the Robert H. Smith School of Business China Business Plan Competition, a three-part contest in which entrepreneurs presented their business ideas to compete for a total of US$45,000 in prizes, were announced on Friday, September 23, in a final round event held in Beijing, China. After several rounds of presentations and questioning by a panel of international venture capital judges, the following were declared the winners:

  1. US$25,000 grand prize winner – Renjing Tu, ShenZhen QianRenRen Science and Technology Development Co., Ltd.
  2. US$15,000 second prize winner – Lufa Kang, K68.cn
  3. US$5,000 third prize winner – Yajia Lv, Aquascape

The Next Business Plan Competition Will Be In China

September 15, 2005 - The Washington Post mentioned that the finals for the Dingman Center's latest business plan competition will take place on September 23 in China, and will be judged my local entrepreneurs, including  Tien Wong , of Opus 8 , John LaPides , of Snow Valley Inc., and Dan Goodman, chief executive of Zernike USA Inc.  The competition was mentioned at the end of an article entitled, "Outgoing SI Chief Reflects on Success" on page D01. The Business School is Featured During a Maryland Day in China

September 2, 2005 -  Maryland Day in China is explained In an article titled "'From College Park to Beijing" in The Capital News Service.  The article explains that a special day for Maryland puts Maryland on par with the University of Cambridge in England and Yale University.  As for the business school, it will be $25,000 to an innovative Chinese entrepreneur who has the most promising business plan. Dingman Director Commends Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank in the The Baltimore Sun

August 27, 2005 - In an article titled "'Perspiration led to Plank's inspiration", The Baltimore Sun quoted Dingman Director Asher Epstein as saying that Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank is "really sort of an entrepreneur's entrepreneur." Mr. Epstein went on to explain that, "a lot of times entrepreneurs get caught up with the great idea and lose sight of the implementation, and Kevin really focused on the implementation. August 2005 - In an article titled "'B' is for biotech in MBA program", the TechLink mentioned The Dingman Center as a source of aid for new biotech firms.  Healthcare Business Association's venture capital conference was cited as an example of the Dingman Center assisting the local biotech community. The Number of Math and Science Diplomas Needs to Double

August 5, 2005 - The Business Roundtable, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Manufacturers and TechNet have banded together to put pressure on policymakers and the public to improve math and science education.  The coalition wants to double the number of bachelor's degrees awarded in science, technology, engineering and math by 2015. Dingman Director Weighs in on Decreasing Entrepreneurship

June 13, 2005 - Dingman Director Asher Epstein was interviewed for an article in bizjournals.com. The article comments on the 20% drop in the number of Americans starting or running a new business during 2004.  Despite the nationwide drop, Mr. Epstein hasn't seen a drop in entrepreneurship interest among Maryland students. June 8, 2005 - Shop DC, a new Washington magazine owned and operated by Smith MBA student and Dingman entrepreneur Zoey Rawlins, was recently featured as one of three new magazines in The Washington Examiner.  The magazine is designed to be a single source for both Washingtonians and tourists to find places to shop. May 20, 2005 - In an interview in The Daily Record, Dingman director Asher Epstein highlighted some of the achievements and goals of the Dingman Center.  He explained that the Dingman Center is only nineteen years old, but it is already a top 20 ranked school by the Wall Street Journal.  Its focus is local, investing $20,000 in two student-run businesses this year, while foreign opportunities have also become available, in such places as China, Egypt, and Israel. Baltimore Businesses Get Fewer SBA Loans

May 3, 2005 - In an article in the Capital News Service, Dingman Director Asher Epstein explained that the steady decline in Small Business Administration Loans in Baltimore could be the result of changes in the business community, such as the rising venture capital in Baltimore's high-technology sector and M&T Bank Corp.'s 2002 acquisition of Allfirst Bank. Maryland Professor Archives the Burst of the .com Bubble

April 15, 2005 - David A. Kirsch, an assistant professor who teaches management and organization, has created an online archive that chronicles the rise and fall of Internet-related start-ups in the heady and tumultuous years from 1996 to 2002. About 60 percent of the companies in his archive either disappeared or never got off the ground, while the rest have survived in some form, often in scaled-down versions. [ Full Story ]

Entrepreneur Magazine Ranks Dingman Center In Top Tier

April 2005 - The Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland ranked among the 13 national schools with “Top Tier” entrepreneurship programs in the April 2005 issue of Entrepreneur magazine. For the third consecutive year and since the survey's inception, the magazine has included the Smith School, and the Dingman Center for Entrepreneurship, prominently among its annual list of the best 100 collegiate entrepreneurship programs in the United States.

According to the sixth annual Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, a report measuring entrepreneurial activity worldwide from Babson College and the London Business School, 73 million people across the globe are either start-up entrepreneurs, or own or manage a young, but growing, business.
