the company through the Sept. 11 tragedy. After Sept. 11, when other airlines
cut their workforces by at least 20 percent, Southwest continued its tradition
of friendly, cost-efficient service, keeping all of its employees on the payroll
and its planes in the air, even going ahead with a $179.8 million profit-sharing
payment to employees three days after the attacks.

“Principled Leadership”
Van Munching Hall
College Park, Maryland
John Allison, former chairman and CEO of BB&T, speaks about how his values
led to personal and professional success. Allison’s focus on fundamental
principles and a clearly defined set of corporate values helped grow BB&T’s
assets from $4.5 billion to $152 billion. His and BB&T’s shared philosophy is
that an individual’s character is of critical significance. Allison’s tenure at
BB&T – from 1989 until his retirement in 2008 – makes him the longest-serving
CEO in the history of one of the nation’s largest banks.
