On Thursday, April 14, 2011, Center for Leadership, Innovation and Change (CLIC) at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business will host the BB&T Colloquium on Capitalism, Ethics and Leadership, with featured speaker Stanley S. Litow of IBM. The session will also include a panel discussion on “Perspectives on Corporate Social Responsibility” with Dan Waetjen, BB&T; Charlie Linaburg, Marriott International; and Melissa Carrier, Center for Social Value Creation, Smith School.

CLIC Launches in Baltimore with Jim Parker, Former CEO of Southwest Airlines
Jim Parker, former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and chairman of the board of Southwest Airlines, is no stranger to the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business – but now he’s officially joined as an executive-in-residence at the school’s just-launched Center for Leadership, Innovation and Change (CLIC). On Dec. 9, 2010, Baltimore-area business leaders came to the University of Maryland BioPark to celebrate the launch of CLIC and to hear Parker’s address on “Leadership in Challenging Times.” [ Full Story ]

CLIC Launch Event Hosted by Former BB&T CEO John Allison
On October 13, 2010, the Center for Leadership, Innovation and Change (CLIC) at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business hosted its College Park launch event with an in-depth presentation by Former Chairman and CEO of BB&T John Allison. The presentation centered around the core values of Allison’s leadership model, “Principled Leadership,” which has been successfully implemented at BB&T and is highly regarded all over the world. Smith School Launches New Center for Leadership, Innovation and Change
More than 200 executives came together for an exploration of leadership at “The New Challenges of Leadership: Public and Private Sector Perspectives,” the inaugural conference of the Smith School’s new Center for Leadership, Innovation and Change (CLIC) on October 1. Keynote speaker Bob Stevens, chairman and CEO of Lockheed Martin, told attendees that leadership was the common denominator that allowed organizations to address the challenges of increasing demands in a time of decreased and constrained resources. Jim Parker is the former chairman and CEO of Southwest Airlines who guided the company through the Sept. 11 tragedy. After Sept. 11, when other airlines cut their workforces by at least 20 percent, Southwest continued its tradition of friendly, cost-efficient service, keeping all of its employees on the payroll and its planes in the air, even going ahead with a $179.8 million profit-sharing payment to employees three days after the attacks.

John Allison, former chairman and CEO of BB&T, speaks about how his values led to personal and professional success. Allison’s focus on fundamental principles and a clearly defined set of corporate values helped grow BB&T’s assets from $4.5 billion to $152 billion. His and BB&T’s shared philosophy is that an individual’s character is of critical significance. Allison’s tenure at BB&T – from 1989 until his retirement in 2008 – makes him the longest-serving CEO in the history of one of the nation’s largest banks.

Pat Stocker Named Executive Director

Pat Stocker, PhD, was named executive director of CLIC. Stocker is President of Stocker & Associates LLC, a consulting organization based in Bethesda, Maryland. She has served as Senior Executive Education Consultant for Marriott International (including Ritz-Carlton and the Marriott Vacation Club businesses) and as program director for their four-week Marriott Executive Development Program and one-week Marriott General Managers Program, and the Leadership Excellence Program for high potential employees. BB&T News Release

In March 2010, the Robert H. Smith School of Business received $1.5 million from the BB&T Foundation to support to business ethics and leadership programs. Awarded over a 10-year period, the gift funds new curriculum and the BB&T Colloquium on Capitalism, Ethics and Leadership lecture series at the Smith School’s new Center for Leadership, Innovation and Change (CLIC).
