| In collaboration with Insight
Policy Research and Westat, CHIDS has been awarded a research contract
for the project “Personal Health Information Management and Design of
Consumer Health IT” from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality
(AHRQ) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). This
project seeks to establish a foundation and propose an action agenda for
the integration of patients’ personal health information management into
the design of patient-centered health information technology. |
| The project will involve an
assessment and synthesis of existing research and evidence regarding
patients’ personal health information management practices and its
linkage to effective development and use of patient-centered health IT;
identifying and convening a multi-disciplinary expert panel to establish
a research agenda around personal health information management and
health IT; and synthesizing the information gained into a final report
to include a preliminary framework for studying this topic and
recommendations for ongoing research, implementation and policy work in
this field. This project will be an important addition to the existing
research portfolio of health information technology research at CHIDS.

Department of Health and Human Services awards a contract to CHIDS. CHIDS was recently
awarded a contract from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) through
the support of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE). CHIDS
will subcontract to WESTAT – the prime contractor - of Rockville, Maryland. The
goal of the proposed project is to retrieve information on the approaches and corresponding
metrics currently in use and proposed for measuring the success and degree of adoption
of HIT. This information will then be made available in a public database. |

NSF awards Industry/University Cooperative Research Centers (I/UCRC) planning grant
to CHIDS. CHIDS was awarded a 1-year planning grant from NSF Industry/University
Cooperative Research Centers (I/UCRCs) program. The program is designed to develop
long-term partnerships among industry, academe, and government. The centers are
catalyzed by a small investment from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and are
primarily supported by center members, with NSF taking a supporting role in their
development and evolution. I/UCRCs stimulate highly leveraged industry/university
cooperation by focusing on fundamental research recommended by Industrial Advisory
Boards. CHIDS' university partner is Mass General Hospital/Harvard Medical and its
current industry partners are Johnson & Johnson Health Care Systems and Pfizer.

CHIDS researchers testify before American Health Information Community (AHIC) On
July 27, 2006 Professor Ritu Agarwal, Director of CHIDS, and Corey Angst, Associate
Director of CHIDS, testified before the American Health Information Community, Consumer
Empowerment Workgroup Hearing on Personal Health Records. The AHIC is headed by
Secretary Mike Leavitt of the Department of Health and Human Services and includes
key leaders from the public and private sectors. The Consumer Empowerment Workgroup
is tasked with reporting to the AHIC recommendations related to gaining wide spread
adoption of a personal health record that is easy-to-use, portable, longitudinal,
affordable, and consumer-centered. Professor Agarwal and Corey Angst presented findings
from recent PHR research they conducted and responded to questions from the workgroup
related to evolving trends and value of using PHRs. For more information and transcripts
from the testimonies, please visit
