Capabilities

CHIDS was formed in an effort to advance the science of technology implementation and decision analysis in the health care sector and better understand its impacts at all levels, including organizational, provider, and individual outcomes. Ultimately, the goal of CHIDS is to improve the delivery of health care by offering researched solutions that impact safety, quality, access, efficiency, and return on investment.

Research Project Sponsorship (RPS) – The primary purpose of CHIDS is to encourage and sponsor research and assist with development related to HIT. To accomplish this objective, the Center provides funding to faculty members who propose interesting, leading-edge research related to HIT and related topics. CHIDS funds individual scholars as well as multidisciplinary teams of researchers who propose projects to CHIDS, or who are interested in undertaking studies brought to CHIDS by its sponsors.

Group Field Projects (GFP) – CHIDS coordinates GFP’s for advanced MBA students enrolled in The Smith School. These GFP’s offer MBA students, who are in their final semester of the program, the opportunity to work in a team with other graduating MBA’s, and solve real-world problems related to development, implementation and/or use of technology in a health care setting. The sponsoring organization assigns the students a project that can be accomplished within the timeframe of a semester and which has specific, measurable, deliverables.

Executive Education in HIT – Certificate programs for health care information technology stakeholders are offered through CHIDS. The programs focus on pitfalls and barriers to HIT implementation in addition to offering best practices and models of success. One or two-day intense, immersion courses related to HIT implementation issues include lectures on adoption frameworks for HIT, study of research results, and practical application of the results. This program is co-produced by the University of Maryland, Robert H. Smith School of Business, Executive Education Center.

Annual HIT Forum – A premier, international annual meeting of key HIT stakeholders, strategists, and academic researchers who seek to educate and be educated on the latest research and development results in health information technology. Events are highly interactive and focus on the most important issues confronting health care entities as they accelerate adoption and adaptation of information technology into their business processes and organizational structures.

Outreach – This function is part of the Center’s efforts to serve key industry partners, academic affiliates, government agencies, and private sector stakeholders by disseminating HIT knowledge through white-papers, short-courses, journal publications, seminars and other distribution channels. Longer term, CHIDS will publish an electronic journal, monograph series, and/or a book of collected papers each year.
