CES AND CAME-PERU DELIVER GLOBAL PROFESSIONAL LEADERS PROGRAM

The Global Professional Leaders program is a five-day program designed to deliver world-class executive education to leaders of businesses from Central and South America. The program, which will be offered October 10-14, 2011, will introduce the latest thought leadership to Central and South American executives focused on building new markets and stronger, more relevant companies. The program is led by CAME-Peru and is being developed in cooperation with Center for Excellence in Service Faculty Fellows and “International Network of Training Institutions Intermediate Directive”. CES PARTNERS WITH SMPS IN EXECUTIVE EDUCATION PROGRAM

The Center for Excellence in Service is partnering with the Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) and Smith’s Office of Executive Programs to offer a customized C-Suite Leadership Development Program (CSLDP). The mission of SMPS is to educate, advocate for, and connect leaders in the building industries, including architects and construction engineers. CES faculty who will teach in the program include Roland Rust, P.K. Kannan, Yogesh Joshi, and Joydeep Srivistava. Janet Wagner will be the Academic Director of the program, which is scheduled to begin in October 2011.

SMITH STUDENTS HELP IMPROVE UMD FOOTBALL EXPERIENCE

A team of first year MBA students, Daniel Christian, Rangavan Mangoran, and Alisa Suthisingh, as well as undergraduate student, Michael Wollins, is engaged with the University of Maryland Athletic Department on a project to improve the marketing efforts of the UMD football program, with the goal of increasing season ticket sales. MBA’S TAKE “WELLBEING” STUDY TOUR TO FINLAND

Finland is ranked #1 in national well-being by Newsweek magazine, based on measures of health, economic openness, education, political environment and quality of life. In May, 2011, Dr. P.K. Kannan will lead a Global Studies Course (BUSI 798) for M.B.A. students with a focus on understanding the transformation of Finland from a good-based economy to a service-based economy. The goal is to understand the impetus for this change, and how Finland jumped on the service-economy and service innovation bandwagon. READ MORE

20TH ANNUAL FRONTIERS IN SERVICE CONFERENCE

Frontiers in Service, the world’s leading conference on service research, will be hosted by the Initiative for Managing Services at the Fisher College of Business, Ohio State University, from June 30-July 3, 2011. The four-day conference will draw over 200 scholars and managers from 38 countries. The event will open with a reception on Thursday evening, followed by an awards dinner on Friday and a special networking event on Saturday. The culmination of the event will be a plenary session on Sunday morning. Frontiers will be held at the Smith School from June 14-17 in 2012. READ MORE

ROLAND RUST PRESENTS TO SMITH ADVISORY BOARD

In February 2011, Dr. Roland Rust, Executive Director of the CES, presented highlights of recent CES-sponsored research to the Smith School Advisory Board. Featured was the social media research of Dr. Wendy Moe, and Dr. Rust’s research on customer equity.

JANET WAGNER CHAIRS UMD ELMS COMMITTEE

Dr. Janet Wagner is the chair of the University of Maryland’s ELMS Faculty Evaluation Committee. The University’s contract with Blackboard, which provides online learning management services (LMS) to educational institutions, expires in 2013. The ELMS committee is charged with evaluating the competing offerings of five LMS vendors, and recommending one to adopt. The committee is working with Chris Higgins, Director of Academic Support in UMD’s Office of Information Technology, and on a comprehensive review that includes a faculty pilot test, surveys, and focus groups, as well as a student survey. A report and recommendation is due in June 2011.

REBECCA HAMILTON RECEIVES AMA’S ERIN ANDERSON AWARD

The American Marketing Association Foundation (AMAF) announced Dr. Rebecca Hamilton, a CES fellow, as the recipient of the 2011 Erin Anderson Award for an emerging female marketing scholar and mentor. The Erin Anderson award is one that recognizes and honors the life of Erin Anderson, a widely respected mentor and marketing scholar from INSEAD. The 2011 Erin Anderson Award committee acknowledged that Dr. Hamilton’s excellence in research and contribution to the field of marketing combined with her effort and devotion to help new scholars in their careers have allowed her to become a leading marketing academic in the mold of Anderson.

JSR CALL FOR PAPERS FOR SPECIAL ISSUE ON IT-RELATED SERVICE

The Journal of Service Research calls for submissions for a special interdisciplinary issue sponsored by the Center for Excellence in Service and the National Science Council of Taiwan. Scholars from marketing, information systems, operations management, human resources, finance/accounting, economics and organizational research are invited to submit papers on IT-related service. Of particular interest are studies that consider the productivity and quality of IT-related service and focus on the relationship with customers in contrast to technology-centered approaches to service management and business interaction. The best paper will receive a first-place award of $2,000, and up to three additional papers will receive honorable-mention awards of $1,000 each. In addition, each award will include an invitation for the paper to be presented at the Frontiers in Service Conference in 2013 (with complementary registration) that will coincide with the publication of the special issue. JANUARY 2011 SMALL BUSINESS SUCCESS SURVEY RESULTS

The results of the January 2011 Small Business Success Survey show that the optimism of small business owners is high. Small businesses are embracing the social media, particularly Facebook and LinkedIn. Owners report that customer service is an important driver of success, and that they use social media for this purpose. READ MORE

This year, Smith Summer Research Grants were awarded to five professors associated with the Center for Excellence in Service. Recipients include Dr. Roland Rust, Dr. Rebecca Hamilton, and Dr. Wendy Moe of Marketing, Dr. Hui Liao of Management, and Dr. Sunil Mithas of DOIT. READ MORE

Founded in 2000 by Roland Rust, the Center for Excellence in Service (CES) is a network of Smith faculty members who are thought leaders in service marketing and management. Our mission is to create and disseminate knowledge of best practices in service marketing and management to improve service quality, foster service innovation, and enhance service productivity. We collaborate with executives and managers from businesses, government, and non-profits to solve important service-related problems and develop future leaders.
