However, the ability to innovate and harness these new technologies requires vision and strong leadership. DIGITS, the Center for Digital Innovation Technology and Strategy at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland and Smartronix invite you to participate in a stimulating discussion about how strong and innovative leadership can turn around a large services organization and drive growth in times of financial challenges and technological changes through digital innovation. We will feature a distinguished key note speaker and a panel of faculty members and industry thought leaders to share their experience and expertise.
Keynote Speaker: Administrator Dan Tangherlini
Mr. Tangherlini was sworn in as Administrator of the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) on July 5, 2013, following his 15 months of service as the Acting Administrator of GSA. Since joining the agency, he has served a vital role in President Barack Obama’s agenda to build a more sustainable, efficient and effective government for the American people. GSA is responsible for improving the government’s workplace by managing assets, delivering maximum value in acquisitions, preserving historic property, and implementing technology solutions.
Administrator Tangherlini is leading a number of initiatives to position GSA as an Innovation Engine for the US Government by using new technologies like virtual offices, cloud computing, and data driven transparency programs to improve organizational performance while reducing costs. Learn about his vision for GSA and upcoming initiatives for delivering cost-effective services to GSA’s customers.
Throughout his career, Administrator Tangherlini has been recognized for fiscal and management leadership. Before joining GSA, he held a variety of senior positions with U.S. Treasury, Government of the District of Columbia, and Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in public policy studies from the University of Chicago and his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
In addition to the keynote address by Administrator Tangherlini we will have a panel of distinguished leaders from academia and industry to share their experiences with driving digital transformation in government and private sectors, and the importance of strong leadership in leveraging digital innovations to create an efficient and effective organization.

DIGITS – the Center for Digital Innovation, Technology, and Strategy at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland serves to leverage intellectual capital across academia, industry, and government. The center focuses on the study of emerging digital technologies and the impact of digital innovation on business functions, firm strategies and policy across a number of industry verticals. The center’s mission is to disseminate scholarly research, connect research with practice and policy, and to foster experiential learning for students. Prof. Il-Horn Hann and Prof. Siva Viswanathan serve as the Co-Directors of DIGITS.
