Experiential Learning

The Center for Financial Policy (CFP) sponsors experiential courses for MBA students through The Smith Experience. These courses provide students the opportunity to gain knowledge in public policy dimensions of finance.   Check back here for upcoming opportunities.The Center for Financial Policy has partnered with ISS (Institutional Shareholder Services) for the Fall 2014 to provide students with hands-on consulting experience with one of the leading proxy advisory firms.  ISS is a provider of corporate governance solutions to the global financial community. More than 1,700 clients rely on ISS' expertise to help them make more informed investment decisions on behalf of the owners of companies.  Students work with a team of researches to develop quantitative assessments of ISS’ governance data.

Guest Speaker Series

Martin Feldstein

The Center also coordinates guest speakers for students interested in particular areas of finance and policy.  CFP Special Fellow, David Kass, organized a visit from Martin Feldstein, president emeritus of the National Bureau of Economic and George F. Baker Professor of Economics at Harvard University to address Smith Students and faculty.

Finance Fellows Speaker Series 

The Center partners with the Smith School’s Office of Undergraduate Studies to host speakers to discuss current financial policy topics with the students in the Finance Fellows program. Speakers have included: 

  • Eric Billings, Chairman and CEO of Arlington Asset Investment Corporation
  • Bruce Richards, Co-Managing Partner and CEO, Marathon Asset Management
  • Matt Fink, Director, Oppenheimer Mutual Funds and former President, Investment Company Institute
  • Jaime Caruana, General Manager of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) 

Student Visits to Financial Companies and Policy Institutions

CFP has coordinated visits for MS Finance and MBA students to various companies and institutions to help them better understand the strategies of these organizations and possible career tracks in the industry. Last year, a group of MS Finance students visited the headquarters of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Smith School’s Global Equity Fund visited the Arlington Asset Investment Corporation.  CFP Special Fellow, David Kass, has accompanied MBA students on trips to Omaha for private meetings with Warren Buffet and Finance Fellows to Berkshire Hathaway’s annual meetings.
