Our Activities

PROFESSIONAL SERVICES LEADERSHIP INITIATIVE (PSLI) IS RESOUNDING SUCCESS

The first cohort of the Professional Services Leadership Initiative (PSLI) graduated in February.  This innovative, cross-sector executive education program was held in two sessions, November 5-7, 2013 and February 25-27, 2014.  Mid-career marketing managers from Randstad, TRowePrice, and JLL, learned the newest strategic thinking in marketing, and applied what they learned in team-based action learning projects chosen by their Chief Marketing Officers. Companies interested in strengthening the skills of marketing managers with executive potential are invited to join us for the 2014-2015 program.  READ MORE.

SMPS UNIVERSITY TO OFFER FOURTH COHORT   

The Society for Marketing Professional Services (SMPS) is partnering with the Center for Excellence in Service (CES) for the fourth year to offer its Leadership Advancement Program, to be held on October 16-17 and November 13-14, 2014.  This program is designed for marketing managers and business developers in architecture, engineering, and construction (A/E/C) firms, to help them gain the business acumen they need to advance in their careers.  CES faculty teach best practices in client research, relationship management, customer lifetime value, service process blueprinting, calculating return on investment, employee management, and professional service leadership.  READ MORE AND REGISTER HERE.

UNIVERSITY OF TAMPERE EMBAs TO VISIT SMITH

The University of Tampere in Finland is partnering with the CES to offer an executive program for visiting EMBA students.  The CES will host 17 EMBA students from the Finnish university May 14-16, 2014, at the Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland, College Park campus. READ MORE.

2014 ANNUAL FRONTIERS IN SERVICE CONFERENCE TO BE HELD JUNE 26-29, 2014

Scholars and business leaders from countries around the world will gather June 26-29, 2014, for the 23rd Annual Frontiers in Service Conference, hosted by the School of Business Administration at the University of Miami. Attendees will present their research on a variety of cross-functional topics, including service marketing, operations, and human resources.  Doctoral students will attend a pre-conference research consortium organized by the AMA Service Marketing Special Interest Group. THE CES HOSTS SOCIAL MEDIA PANEL AT SMITH SCHOOL BUSINESS SUMMIT

The CES sponsored a panel on social media at the Smith School Business Summit (SSBS) at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center in Bethesda, Maryland.  The CES invited four panelists working as social media managers or consultants to discuss the challenges and rewards of using social media to provide customer support and build customer relationships. ROLAND RUST QUOTED IN THE NEW YORK TIMES

Roland Rust, Executive Director of the CES, Distinguished University Professor, and David Bruce Smith Chair in Marketing, was quoted recently in the New York Times on how GM is using social media strategy to manage the public relations fallout from its recent ignition switch recall. READ MORE.

P.K. KANNAN RECEIVES THE 2014 DAVIDSON AWARD

P.K. Kannan, the Chair of the Department of Marketing and Ralph J. Tyser Professor of Marketing Science at the Smith School received the Journal of Retailing’s 2014 Davidson Award for the best research paper published in the previous year. READ MORE.
